Assignment Brief

Introduction from the Module Leader

  • The module primarily examines the ways in which the working relationship between the operator–machine and the environment they are in can be adapted for efficiency and safety. It will examine the various ways in which the two major systems components of “operator” and “environment” interact and builds upon knowledge gained from previous study aligned to this subject. 
  • Each week, you will be given a presentation on a topic of specific or general scope, normally followed by a discussion to examine the topic in greater depth. You will be given a range of tasks or directed learning to complete from week to week which will be reviewed in the tutorial period.
  • It is most important that these tasks are attempted as directed by the tutor for effective learning to take place and students are encouraged to review the lecture notes and other materials each week. Much of the presentation material is included on the VLE/ MyBeckett but supplementary notes and other items will be issued throughout the semester.

The assessment is aimed to test all of the learning outcomes of the module.

Module Aims

  • The module will examine the physical working environment and the factors that contribute to the comfort of workers whilst at work.
  • The module will explore the design of workplaces and common working tools including the design of working time and shift patterns.
  • The module will examine the role of Ergonomics and how the Ergonomic considerations, or lack of them may have contributed to major disasters.
  • The good design of the working environment is crucial in helping reduce the environmental stressors and the sessions will examine the detrimental effects of the environmental stressors.

Module Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate a critical systematic understanding of the term “Human Factors”
  • Critically evaluate how time may affect human performance
  • Critically evaluate and appraise the ergonomic design features of workplaces
  • Critically evaluate methods and application of Ergonomic Controls including Ergonomic Investigation Techniques

Module Learning Activities

You will be expected to view any recorded materials and undertake any suggested reading prior to the tutorial. You will have a 1 hour tutorial every week where activities/discussion of the topic areas will take place.

Students are expected to:

  • Attend and participate in weekly lectures and complete self-study exercises and group study exercises
  • Be self-motivated and independent learners.
  • Read academic literature around their subject area and research methods to support their development and enable them to adequately prepare for assessments.
  • Students will be encouraged to register on the IOSH website to gain access to the IOSH research area, where they will be able to gain access to IOSH sponsored research information.
  • Students will also be directed to, and encouraged to access the online journals and websites to help develop prior knowledge and understanding of certain topics.
  • Students will be expected to, and encouraged to access and make use of the learning resources contained within the Skills for Learning website to help develop their practical learning skills.

Communication

Communication will be made via student email and the VLE. You must notify your Course Administrator if you are absent (for example, for an interview, emergency unforeseen circumstances, or for compassionate leave). If you are going to apply for mitigation you will need to provide written evidence of the reason for your absence (see Extenuating Circumstances and Mitigation below for further information).

Assessment 1

MultiTech is an IT support provider who have taken on a new contract with a large organisation in England. The contract requires night shift work which MultiTech has only offered in one other contract where they have had issues with staff turnover and sickness absence.
