EPM712 - Coursework Design Project: Two-Storey Steel and Composite Car Park :Design of Steel and Composite Structures

Published: 30 Jan, 2025
Category Coursework Subject Engineering
University City University of London Module Title EPM712 Design of Steel and Composite Structures

Objective

Design a sustainable, adaptable, deconstruct-able, and reusable two-storey car park using steel, light gauge steel, and with any steel-concrete composite system learned in this module. The car park must accommodate minimum of 100 parking slots, adhering to UK car park regulations for vehicle dimensions and manoeuvring spaces. Designs must follow Eurocode 3 (EC3) and Eurocode 4 (EC4) standards.

Design Scope

1.    Structural System: Use one composite structural system (e.g., metal deck, precast concrete units, slim floor systems, or perforated beams).
2.    Car Park Layout:

  • Standard car parking slot dimensions: 2.4m (width) x 4.8m (length).
  • Drive aisles width: 6m minimum for two-way traffic.
  • Headroom clearance: 2.1m minimum.
  • Allow for pedestrian circulation and a small space for landscaping (if possible).

3.    Building Dimensions:

  • Approximate total area: 2,500–3,000m².
  •  Two floors with equal load distribution.
  • Consider bays and spans optimized for material efficiency and structural stability.

Design Deliverables

1.    Structural Analysis:

  • Provide a structural layout plan for the car park with clear indications of bay sizes, spans, and beam arrangements.
  • Summarise results of manual calculations and computer analysis (if used for validation).

2.    Structural Design:

  • Complete design calculations for critical structural elements: (composite) beams, columns, and connections.
  • Include actions from dead loads and live loads (parking loads).

3.    Sustainability Analysis:

  • Evaluate material efficiency (mass, embodied carbon, etc.).

  • Highlight adaptability and reusability of materials in the design.
  •  Carbon footprint estimation using tools like:
    1. The Structural Carbon Tool.
    2. Concrete Embodied Carbon Footprint Calculator.
    3. Carbon Footprint Calculator.

Floor Layout

  • Design a representative floor plate showing:
  1.  Parking slots.
  2. Circulation aisles.
  3. Structural elements (columns, beams, etc.).
  4. One pedestrian access route and one vehicular ramp.
