Assignment Brief

Purpose of the Assessment

To assess understanding of key principles and theories in economics and the ability of the students to apply these principles and theories to business and management scenarios.

The aim of the assessment is to:

• Introduce students to business and economics environment. In addition to helping build an individual identity, it also immerses students into a research-oriented culture and environment.
• Provide students with the opportunity to be creative and imaginative whilst learning (and applying) several of the fundamentals of macroeconomics and microeconomics.

Assessment Task

You are required to write a report on a company of your choice.

• The report must consider and analyse how microeconomic and macroeconomic factors may affect your chosen company given current circumstances. You will also consider how your company is impacted by the push for a “greener economy”.
• The objectives to cover, suggested outline and marking criteria are provided below.

Selecting your company:

• Select a company that you are interested in – it does not matter what industry the company is in, all companies are affected by economic factors, given that you would be conducting research on the company, pick one that you would enjoy researching about.
       ->  If you select a company that has multiple products, you can select a   product group to focus on e.g. if you select Samsung, you can focus on Smartphones, or Tablets, or TVs etc, or you can focus on an individual product.
        ->  It is suggested that you choose a Public Limited Company (plc.) as they have to publish data about themselves as part of their plc. requirements and as such may be easier to obtain information on.

Individual Assignment

The purpose of the assignment is to give a better understanding of fundamental economic concepts and issues. The concepts of market forces of supply and demand, macroeconomic environment and its impact on business should be put in practice to answer questions. Students’ responses should include specific examples and should incorporate concepts and terms from textbook and additional class material provided. It is essential that students also conduct their own research.
