Your task is to produce an academic poster that documents the issues of water usage associated with one product or commodity in a named and located place, together with the sustainability issues concerning its wider transboundary context.
Your poster must contain the following information:
Title – a catchy title that captures the content of your poster – include the name of the product/commodity and your chosen place.
Introduction – a brief overview of the main issues that your research has covered.
Water footprint – For your selected product or commodity (e.g. cotton, a pair of jeans, a mobile phone, soya beans, a pair of shoes, a loaf of bread or something else), research the water footprint for this product or commodity and deconstruct this to establish how much water is used in the different processes that are used to exploit, make, manufacture or produce it. You must state the product or commodity, and you must focus on a named geographic location where this product or commodity is made or produced. You must include specific factual details about the use of water in the manufacture or exploitation of your selected product or commodity – include data and statistics.
Local issues - For the same product or commodity, research the social, economic and/or political challenges caused by the production and/or consumption of this product in the named country, region or location. Give specific, named examples, explain and critically analyse these. You can choose to cover one challenge in detail, or several challenges in less detail.
Transboundary issues – Your selected product or commodity will cause wider concerns about the sustainability of water in a transboundary context (for example, imports/exports, virtual water, water pollution, water security, water rights, international water agreements). Using statistics, data, and examples, critically analyse at least one transboundary issue concerning your selected product or commodity.
Conclusion – A summary of the issues of sustainability covered by your poster.
References – You must provide a list of references using APA referencing. Citations can be included as numbered footnotes, in which case, the reference list should be in numerical, not alphabetical order. A smaller font size can be used for the references; however, they must remain legible.
Present your information in the form of an academic poster produced using Microsoft PowerPoint. Additional guidance will be available via Aula and subject sessions. The poster should be produced to a quality whereby it could be printed and used in an academic conference setting as an aid for you to answer questions from other interested academics (note: you are only expected to submit an electronic version via Turnitin on Aula).
Your assignment will be marked by the module team.
Provisional marks will be released once internally moderated. Feedback will be provided via Turnitin on Aula.
Your provisional marks and feedback should be available within 2 weeks (10 working days).
Details of the marking criteria for this task can be found at the bottom of this assignment brief.
The Learning Outcomes for this module align with the marking criteria, which can be found at the end of this brief. Ensure you understand the marking criteria to ensure achievement of the assessment task. The following module learning outcomes are assessed in this task:
1. Analyse the challenges in sustainable management of water supply and demand across regional, national and international boundaries.
4. Assess the social and environmental impacts of large-scale water consumption.
