Richard tells you to go away because he doesn’t want any milk today. You explain again that you are there to help him to have a shower and a shave.

Home Safety
Hilda is 65 years old. She lives with her daughter and granddaughter Charlie. Hilda is blind. Her daughter works long hours to support the family and often leaves Hilda alone to care for Charlie.
She lives at home and has done a good job of caring for her granddaughter since Charlie turned six and her mother went back to work. She is, however, concerned that Charlie is now mobile and running around. Last week she found her playing in the toilet bowl with her toys. Hilda expresses concern about fire safety now there is a toddler running around.

All cupboards have child safety locks, but drawers do not.
There are safety protectors on all power points.
There is one smoke alarm in the kitchen – the battery was last changed 12 months ago.
Charlie has learned that if she is very quiet, Hilda can’t tell what she is doing – this is how she was able to play in the toilet without being detected.
Charlie can move around the space much faster and easier than Hilda.
Charlie is a big child for her age.
She likes to be picked up a lot and often asks Hilda’s carers to pick her up and play with her.
As Hilda has vision impairment finds difficult to locate Charlie and Charlie sometimes falls and cries for Hilda to pick her up.
Today you are visiting Hilda to do a safety assessment of her home.
Refer to Banksia Care Safety and Risk Management Policy and Procedure. Fill in the table below, indicating the potential hazards and then complete the rest of the form using the risk rating table provided. Hazards can be to yourself (carer), client or the client’s child. You will need to identify at least one possible hazard for:
Infection
Manual handling
Injury.

In this task, you will be observed to confirm you can respond to a situation involving blood or body fluids and implement infection prevention and control precautions according to national standards, guidelines and workplace expectations.
You will be observed in the workplace where possible; however, where the full range of contexts and situations cannot be provided in the work setting or may occur only rarely, you will be observed in a simulated environment.
Observation will be on one occasion performing several specific tasks. The tasks are provided below.
Scenario for Simulated Environment
During your shift at Banksia Care, Mark, who is one of the residents, has had a hard fall. He has fallen as he exited the shower. He has slipped and hit his head on the towel hanger and a large wound has opened up just above his eye. The paramedics have been called and Mark has been taken to hospital in ambulance. After he and all of the support staff have vacated the room, you have been called in to clean up the sizeable blood spill that has occurred.
You have been informed by the attending support worker that as Mark exited the shower, he called for help just before slipping and falling. She has informed you that Mark sometimes loses balance due to an inner ear issue and this is likely the cause of his fall.
While cleaning up you have identified that Mark could have also slipped on the bathmat which was not secured and looks like it came out from under his foot. There is also no grab bar to assist Mark as he exits the shower – there is one in the shower and one by the toilet, but not one along the wall near the towel hanger. You can see that the towel hanger is bent and broken, most likely because Mark tried to grab it for balance and it broke causing him to fall and hit his head.
1. Name two standard precautions that you used during the clean up of the blood spill.
2. Name two examples of additional precautions that could be applied.
Where further verbal questioning is required or additional prompts are required that do not interfere with reliability of assessment process, please document the questions asked in the space provided below and the responses provided by the student.

You will be observed in a simulated environment to confirm you can perform skills to industry standards and workplace expectations.
You will be observed on two occasions performing a number of specific tasks. The tasks are provided below. This project is made up of three parts:
Part A: For this part of the task, you must respond to an emergency situation by assisting a client exit the building.
Part B: For this part of the task, you must participate in a debriefing about your response to the emergency situation with your supervisor.
Further instructions for each part are provided below.
Scenario
A fire has broken out in the kitchen at Banksia Care. The kitchen is adjacent to the dining room, where several residents and guests are having lunch. The fire alarm has been sounded, and the fire warden has called the fire brigade. Clients and guests now need to be assisted to the evacuation area.
You have been asked to help one client from their chair into a wheelchair and take them outside to the emergency evacuation area.
Your client can mostly move on their own from their dining chair and into the wheelchair, but they are slow and shaky. As there is an emergency in process and evacuation needs to happen relatively quickly, the client needs assistance to keep stable to ensure they don’t fall or hurt themselves.
Help the client move from their chair into the wheelchair and follow emergency policy and procedures to help them safely exit the building.
1. What manual handling hazards did you have to deal with during this task? Describe how you did this.
2. Thankfully fires do not occur often. How do you keep your skills up to date so that if an emergency occurs, you know what to do?
3. In an emergency situation like this, what techniques or strategies would you use to remain calm?
4. According to the emergency management plan of Banksia Care, a supervisor may request a debrief about the emergency situation and what happened. What would you say if asked about this incident?
5. If asked by your supervisor to give any advice or lessons learned from the emergency experience, what would you say?

After attending to your client and assisting them to exit the building during the emergency situation your supervisor has called you in to debrief. The debrief session happens in their office and is a confidential meeting where you will discuss your level of stress and fatigue following the emergency evacuation. This is also your chance to discuss your individual needs in situations like this.
Your supervisor has asked you to complete a service review and improvement template which you bring to the meeting.
Did the student demonstrate the required level of competence for each of the following points?
• The student was clearly able to answer the question: Explain what you did when you heard the fire alarm go off.
• The student was clearly able to answer the question by reflecting on their level of stress: Was the experience stressful for you?
• The student was able to explain their level of fatigue following this experience and give a number on a scale from 1–5.
• Student was able to explain the level of difficulty in assisting the client to transfer from their chair to a wheelchair? They could speak to some ideas/strategies of what could have helped overcome any challenges during this process?

Scenario for Simulated Environment:
Elaine is a resident at Banksia Care.
Elaine looks a little unwell today, not her usual chirpy, smiling self. When asked how she is doing, she responds saying that she feels a little tired and doesn’t have much appetite. As a COVID-19 screen precaution, her temperature has been checked she has been asked a series of questions related to flu-like symptoms. She checked out fine so you don’t think too much of it.
About halfway through your time with Elaine, she suddenly stops talking and holds her breath. When asked what’s wrong she tries to explain and then suddenly vomits.
You suspect that this might be gastroenteritis and you will need to clean up and take the necessary precautions to avoid spreading the infection in the facility.
