CE6012 Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment Coursework Assessment Brief - KUL

Published: 21 Mar, 2025
Category Coursework Subject Civil Engineering
University Kingstone University London (KUL) Module Title CE6012 Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment

Assessment task and specific terms

The aim of the coursework is to analyse an existing T junction (Intersection of Brighton Road/Victoria Road in Surbiton, Surrey) and propose a new design which would accommodate an increased traffic.

  1. The Google map view of the location:
  2. The Traffic streams using the Junction:
  3. The Existing Traffic Volume Data measured on Wednesday (02.10.2019):

The report should include/cover the following tasks:

  1. .An introduction: aim of "Traffic Assessment" (refer to the National Planning Policy Framework);
  2. Information about traffic surveys, types of survey and expected results.
  3. Explain the use of PCUs;
  4. Describe the location and type of the junction being considered and the general information about the traffic flow on the major arm and minor arm;
  5. Using the survey data, given as collected, and Junctions 8prove that the junction works. Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic flow, etc);
  6. Manipulate the data, with a rationale (i.e. the impact of a new development on the local traffic; generated and attracted trips), to make the junction fail (first Growth Factor);
  7. Assume a growth factor (second Growth Factor) between 1 and 2. Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic flow, etc);
  8. Produce a viable solution, i.e. a roundabout design, drawn up using Vehicle tracking (AutoCAD);
  9. Check that an articulated lorry (British, FTA 1998 16.5m) can maneuver round the roundabout by carrying out a swept path analysis (attach A3 drawing);
  10. Check if the LOS of the proposed upgrade is satisfactory (for Both the Existing and the Future Traffic). Use Junctions 8to design and analyse a roundabout solution using the increased traffic data (applying the Growth Factor); if no viable solution is to be achieved, propose option(s) for other solutions.
  11. Show the LOS of the 3 arms (attach A3 drawings with all relevant technical information: geometry, visibility, entry path curvature);
  12. Discuss the workability of the final solution;
