BQS 552 INTRODUCTION

In construction, detailed analysis and extensive research are needed to be conducted at all levels, even long before the design and contract process can be carried out. Gathering information on previous successful projects, current resources, general site conditions, the latest technologies, and many more are essential in the process of proposing the construction of the development.

BQS 552 AIMS

The assignment aims:

• To encourage the students to explore through literature search from various sources (primary or secondary data) on the topic given.
• To help the students to appreciate the theoretical aspects which have been discussed and delivered in the classes and analyse their application in the construction industry.
• To encourage students to carry out the task on a systematic research-based approach.
• To evaluate the understanding of the students through the task submitted.

BQS 552 COURSEWORK BRIEF

The assignment is in the form of a case study of the topics selected as follows;

1. Earthwork
2. Soil improvements & stabilisation techniques
3. Retaining Structures
4. Deep Foundations
5. Basement
6. Surface, subsurface water drainage & pipe works

BQS 552 TASK 1 (WRITTEN REPORT)

1. Choose TWO (2) real-life building/project that is completed within the past 10 years. This could be a residential or commercial building, and could be located in any geographical area.
2. Research the design, construction and cost of the assigned topic and, gather information on the followings (but not limited to):

i) Basement

• Excavation and construction techniques
• Waterproofing and drainage systems Ventilation and air quality considerations
• Electrical and plumbing requirements

ii) Piling

- The type, length, and diameter of the piles used in the project.

• The method of installation/construction used for the piles.
• The testing and inspection procedures used to ensure the integrity of the piles.
• The effectiveness of the piling system in supporting the structure

iii) Earth Retaining Structure

• The type of earth retaining structure used in the project
• The materials used for the construction of the structure
• The design and analysis methods used to determine the dimensions and strength of the structure
• The construction techniques used to build the structure
• The testing and monitoring procedures used to evaluate the effectiveness of the structure

iv) Soil improvements & stabilisation techniques

• The type of soil and its properties
• The soil improvement and stabilization techniques used in the project.
• The materials used for the soil improvement and stabilization.
• The construction techniques used to apply the soil improvement and stabilization techniques.
• The testing and monitoring procedures used to evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques.

v) Surface, subsurface water drainage & pipe works

• The location and design of the drainage structures
• The materials and equipment used in the construction of the drainage system
• The maintenance and upkeep of the drainage system
• The effectiveness of the system in preventing flooding and water damage

vi) Earthwork

The type of soil and its properties

• The scope and magnitude of the earthwork operations
• The equipment and tools used for the earthwork operations
• The excavation, grading, backfilling, and compaction techniques used
• The safety procedures and environmental regulations followed during the earthwork operations

3. Discuss the problems involved with regards on the assigned topic (in your chosen project/case study) and the solution to dealt with it. Provide your recommendations for any improvements that could be made to make them more effective, efficient, or functional.

4. Compare and contrast the findings from the research conducted on each building, focusing on the following aspects (but not limited to):

BQS 552 INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This is a Group Assignment. Groups will consist of 4-5 students, depending on the total number of students in the class.
2. Written Report: shall be in English, with 11-point Arial font and 1.5 spacing.
3. The main parts of the report should discuss (but not limited to) the topics covered, literature review, analysis, discussion, and conclusion.
4. List of references of at least ten (10) current references (Journal, Books, and Internet sources).
5. Submission due date for Written Report: 27th JUNE 2025. LATE SUBMISSION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

BQS 552 ASSESSMENT (WRITTEN REPORT)

1. Marks will be awarded on a group basis for the written report submitted.
2. Students are required to prepare their own analysis and not to copy or use previous assignments.

BQS 552 TASK 2 (PRESENTATION)

1. 15 minutes of presentation and 10 minutes of Q&A session on the assigned topic. 
2. All group members should participate in the presentation.
3. Presentation will be held in week 13 (TBC).
