Module overview  

Aims: 

The module aims to provide students with an insight into the science of bringing a drug  to the market i.e the processes involved in the design and development of new drugs.  This is a student led module in which students research and report on a current topic  of their choice within the area of drug design and development. The module provides  students with the opportunity to develop in depth knowledge in the science involved  within their topic and an appreciation of the role played by stakeholders such, as  companies, consumers, research institutions and governments in the wider health  system. 

Learning outcomes: 

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to: 

1. Critically review the current literature relating to advances within the field of drug  design and development 

2. Critically evaluate the chosen topic exploring its potential in drug development 3. Critically evaluate the role of societal impact on drug development 4. Effectively communicate scientific concepts relating to the chosen topic 

Syllabus: 

Content is flexible and will be selected by the student however, the general topics  may include: 

• Drug targets 

• Origins of drug molecules 

• Biological aspects of drug development 

• Formulations 

• Clinical research 

Learning and teaching strategy: 

Teaching and learning in this module rely on guided independent study and support  workshops. Students will attend a preliminary introductory session on the context and  assessment of the module followed by support workshops on using online and other  resources for research purposes and discussing with their peers and tutors the chosen  topics. Teaching sessions can take place either on campus or online. Students are  expected to attend the department’s research seminars, which will facilitate their  understanding of current research.
