BBM109 Careers Management Skills – Student Assessment Guidance

Purpose of the Assessment

This assessment enables you to critically reflect on your career aspirations, employability skills, and 
professional development throughout the module. It assesses your ability to evaluate your learning, identify strengths and development needs, and plan realistic next steps in your career journey.

The assignment encourages critical self-awareness and connects your MSc learning to your future professional goals.

Assessment Structure and Word Count

Your submission should be 1,000 words (+/-10%) and must include the following three sections:

1.Career Aspirations (250 words)

a.Identify your short- and long-term career goals.
b.Explain how your MSc learning supports these goals.
c.Discuss the employability and transferable skills essential for your chosen direction.

2.Reflection on Career Development (550 words)

a.Critically reflect on the key employability and professional skills you have developed.
b.Evaluate the effectiveness of a minimum of two and a maximum of four development activities (e.g., workshops, networking, mentoring, professional projects) - you must select specific examples from the workshop / event / conversation that particularly resonated with you.
c.Demonstrate insight into your growth, confidence, and readiness for your chosen career path.

3.Plans for Further Development (200 words)

a.Outline a clear and realistic plan for your next steps.
b.Identify remaining development areas and how you will address them.
c.Include specific and actionable steps to achieve your goals.

BBM109 Assessment Criteria and Standards

Your work will be evaluated according to the following broad standards:

Demonstrates a clear, realistic, and well-articulated career direction.

Career goals are unclear, unrealistic, or missing.

Shows strong connections between MSc learning, employability skills, and personal career goals.

Limited or no connection between MSc learning and employability development.

Reflection is critical and analytical, showing depth of understanding and evidence of personal growth.

Reflection is superficial or purely descriptive, showing little personal insight.

Future plans are realistic, specific, and well structured.

Career plan is vague or incomplete, with few or no actionable steps.

Work is coherent, professionally written, and demonstrates postgraduate-level insight.

Writing lacks structure, coherence, or critical awareness

Tips for Success

  • Be reflective, not descriptive: Focus on what you learned and how you have developed, rather than listing activities.
  • Show alignment: Link your MSc programme learning outcomes to your professional ambitions.
  • Use evidence: Refer briefly to workshops, events, or experiences to support your reflection.
  • Be specific: Clearly identify key skills (e.g., leadership, teamwork, communication) and explain how they relate to your goals.
  • Write professionally: Maintain a formal tone, clear structure, and logical flow.
  • Plan ahead: Ensure your development plan is realistic, time-bound, and relevant to your desired career path.

You will receive written feedback summarising your strengths and areas for improvement, as well as forward-looking advice to support your ongoing career and professional development.
