Assessment Brief for Leading Teaching, Improving Learning and Global Education Reform
A (‘desk based’) case study (3,000 words) providing an in-depth analysis of an issue linked to leading teaching and improving learning in a ‘local’ context. ‘Local’ may be defined in this assignment either as a specific teaching and learning issue in your professional context or a specific government policy aimed at system-wide improvement in a national context.

a) The case study will be guided by 1-2 questions that focus on an analysis of the diverse ‘actors’, ‘change agents’, relationships, and in/external contextual factors that impede or enhance teaching and learning.

b) the analysis will be underpinned by theoretical models and published research literature that shed light on the complexity of improvement initiatives in context.

Choose ONE of the following:

1. An evaluation of Carol’s leadership of pedagogical change
2. An evaluation of pedagogy (or teaching methods) in Lucy’s mathematics class
3. An evaluation of two teaching approaches in Catherine’s chemistry class
4. The case of… If you prefer to evaluate a case of your choice, then an assignment focused on ‘The case of…’ will be more appropriate. This assignment will also be guided by one or two questions. In the Example assignment on the ‘case of curricular change in England’, the student has identified the following thought-provoking question: ‘Who is best placed to set the direction of curricular change?’ and argued for teachers driving curricular change by drawing on change management theory. Whichever your choice, you will seek to develop a critical evaluation of the case and draw on theory (or one or two theoretical concepts). This can be either a theory/concept studied in this module or in other modules you have studied. For instance, the example case study evaluating ‘Catherine’s experience of learning chemistry’ draws on Illeris’s three dimensions of learning.
