Assessment Summary:

The brief for Assignment No. 2 is to write an analysis of a case study, answering the questions set at the end of the case.

The objective of the case study analysis is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate how you can apply the skills & knowledge that you have acquired during the course of the module to a practical Employee Relations problem. You should be referring to the various theories and tools of analysis which were used each week.  

The case study analysis asks students to demonstrate their ability to diagnose a particular organisational environment. It also requires them to demonstrate the extent to which they have developed their knowledge and understanding of a range of issues relevant to employee relations and can apply that knowledge to a specific set of circumstances. Thus, students are required to evaluate alternative courses of action and justify their chosen approach with a coherent line of argument.

  • Proposed structure of the assessment

Title page: Include the word count, coursework title, the University of Westminster, the date, your class tutor’s name, the module code and title.
Case Study Analysis – in this section follow the Problem-Solving Cycle as discussed in class; this can be summarised as follows:
2/1) Problem Identification and Causes (900 words)

In this subsection, you need to identify the organisational problem/s in the case study and the possible causes of these problems, using the theories/concepts that we have discussed in class as tools of analysis. 
     2/2) Identification of the Business Objectives  (200 words)

In this subsection, you need to identify the most important business objectives of this organisation that you would seek to achieve in addressing the problems identified.
     2/3) Potential Solutions (900 words)
               In this subsection, you need to address the following 3 questions:

I.  What solutions would you suggest to address the problems to meet the above organisational objectives (in 2/2) and improve employee relations and employee engagement? (Refer to the relevant theories/concepts to support your solutions).
II.  What are the criteria for an appropriate solution?
III. In the light of these criteria, recommend the solution/s which meet the criteria and which you believe to be the most likely to address the problems you have identified in the case.

Report format: Insert page numbers in your report, use double spacing between the lines, use a bigger margin on the right. Use font Arial 12 or similar, use formal language, and British English spelling.
