Assemble Collective - Yard house Stratford 2014
This module explores the nature and definitions of cross disciplinary research in art, architecture, and design-based practices. Whether you are an artist contributing to an exhibition, or a designer working with an engineer on a large-scale commission, the ability to communicate and manage creative thinking is an essential skill to develop. As part of this, learning to work constructively as part of an interdisciplinary team is a must. Additionally, working with shared and diverse perspectives on creative problems / opportunities provides a great way to generate novel ideas that challenge disciplinary conventions!
No matter what your experience of teamwork, it is important to develop skills when working with others. This will often involve working with a range of creatives, commissioners or stakeholders who may have different perspectives on the creative process. This module aims to emulate this interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder experience to help you to develop skills and strategies moving forward. The Collaborative Practice module will give you the time and space to work creatively on a practical and exploratory project.

This year the Collaborative Practice brief has been developed in partnership with Coventry Cathedral. Throughout the module you will have access to the building and grounds. Sites visits to the Cathedral will provide you with the opportunity to expand your understanding and knowledge of its history, and mission. Additionally it will be an opportunity to identify a starting point for research, concept and design development. Throughout the module you will be expected to conduct self-directed research into the building, its architecture and artworks. Be resourceful and remember the Cathedral and its grounds are a very near!
Stories in Stone & Collaborative Practice Cohort - Coventry Cathedral, 2022.
Coventry has had three cathedrals on its current site spanning nearly 1000 years. Today’s site includes the previously bombed cathedral destroyed in 1940, alongside the new Cathedral completed in 1962. The Cathedral houses many powerful art works by some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. For many of the artists the commission to restore and re-build the cathedral became a deeply personal project. Today the old and new cathedrals stand side by side representing forgiveness and reconciliation.

You are required to research and develop a proposal for a summer pavilion. The pavilion structure can be modular or static and should be designed to sit in the grounds of the old cathedral. The final design must include a proposal for a public, community arts programme and legacy plan.
When researching and developing the pavilion design you should consider the Cathedrals commitment to the arts as a means of revealing common ground and facilitating reconciliation across nations, faiths and communities. The final pavilion design and public, community arts programme should address the Cathedrals commitment to peace and reconciliation across all faiths.
The cathedral would welcome pavilion designs that facilitate a space for rich storytelling and courageous listening that births reconciliation.
Alongside this, the proposed pavilion design, community programme and legacy plan should be sustainable in terms of materials and construction and designed in response to the United Nations Global Goal:
11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
