Note: it is your responsibility to make sure that your work is complete and available for marking by the deadline.  Make sure that you have followed the submission instructions carefully, and that your work is submitted in the correct format, using the correct hand-in mechanism (e.g., Moodle upload).  If submitting via Moodle, you are advised to check your work after upload, to make sure it has uploaded properly. If submitting via OneDrive, ensure that your tutors have access to the work. Do not alter your work after the deadline.  You should make at least one full backup copy of your work.

Penalties for late submission

The timeliness of submissions is strictly monitored and enforced.

All coursework has a late submission window of 7 calendar days, but any work submitted within the late window will be capped at 50% unless you have an agreed extension.  Work submitted after the 7-day late window will be capped at zero unless you have an agreed extension.  See ‘Assessment Mitigation’ below for further information on extensions.

Please note that individual tutors are unable to grant any extensions to assessments.

Assessment Mitigation

If there is a valid reason why you are unable to submit your assessment by the deadline you may apply for Assessment Mitigation. There are two types of mitigation you can apply for via the module area on Moodle (in the ‘Assessments’ block on the right-hand side of the page):

  • Non-evidenced extension: does not require you to submit evidence. It allows you to add a short extension to a deadline. This is not available for event-based assessments such as in-class tests, presentations, interviews, etc. You can apply for this extension during the assessment weeks, and the request must be made before the submission deadline. For this assessment, the self-certification extension is 2 days.
  • Evidenced extension: requires you to provide independent evidence of a situation which has impacted you. Allows you to apply for a longer extension and is available for event-based assessments such as in-class tests, presentations, interviews, etc.  For event-based assessments, the normal outcome is that the assessment will be deferred to the summer reassessment period.
Further information about Assessment Mitigation is available on the dedicated Assessments page.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the unacknowledged representation of another person’s work, or use of their ideas, as one’s own. Manchester Metropolitan University takes care to detect plagiarism, employs plagiarism detection software, and imposes severe penalties, as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and Academic Misconduct Policy. Poor referencing or submitting the wrong assignment may still be treated as plagiarism. If in doubt, seek advice from your tutor.

As part of a plagiarism check, you may be asked to attend a meeting with the Module Leader, or another member of the module delivery team, where you will be asked to explain your work (e.g. explain the code in a programming assignment).  If you are called to one of these meetings, it is very important that you attend.

1.Task Description

Your task is to work in pairs (maximum 5), or individually (in exceptional circumstances only), to present your selected topic, on which you are writing a survey paper. Further details about the presentations can be found in the next section.

2.Your presentation

Record a 5-minute video. In this video, all group members must present with the camera on. You are free to decide on the slides each group member will present. However, the presentation must contain the following 5 slides.

  • Introduction (1 slide): Briefly describe the topic that you are surveying. For instance, if your survey paper is about "Security and Privacy issues in resource-constrained Internet of Things", then the introductory slides should briefly cover the following key details.
oWhat is the Internet of Things (IoT) and resource-constrained IoT?
oWhat are general security and privacy issues in resource-constrained IoT?
  • Classification of the reviewed papers (1 slide):  Briefly shed light on the classifications of the reviewed papers. For instance, in the above survey paper, you can have two different classifications/categories 1) security issues in resource-constrained IoT and 2) privacy issues in resource-constrained IoT. Each of the categories should contain the list of technical papers that you have found so far. You don't need to go into the details of those technical papers; just paper titles, references (must), and one-line descriptions would suffice.
  • Proposal/Research Challenges (1 slide): Briefly discuss the novel idea that you are developing to solve the problem that you have identified in your survey paper field. Alternatively, you can mention the open challenges in the survey field that have not been addressed yet.
  • Evaluation Tools/Experimentation Details (1 slide): Briefly discuss the experimentation/simulation tools that are available to measure the performance of the research works in the survey paper field. Just a name and a one-line explanation about the tool would suffice.
  • Conclusion (1 slide): Conclude the presentation.

The PowerPoint slides should be ready before the coursework support sessions i.e., before Week 11. The module team will review your slides in the week 11 lab session to give you formative feedback. You can then use that feedback to further improve both the presentation and survey paper until the deadline.

3.Submission instructions

The deadline for submission of your recorder presentation video and PowerPoint slide is mentioned on the Moodle submission portal. You must submit your files  via the appropriate links on Moodle. The deadline is a hard deadline unless you have applied for a self-certified extension or if you have an exceptional factors application approved.

All students must upload PDF, PowerPoint slides, and presentation videos individually (even if you are working in a group) on Moodle. Failure to do so will result in 0 marks.

4.Marking

Your work will be assessed based on the 2 Tasks below:

Sections/Tasks Weighting
1.  Presentation Content 50%
2.  Presentation Delivery 50%

4.1.If you are working in a group:

  • 50% of your final mark is based on your group work (Task 1)
  • 50% of your final mark is based on your individual contribution (Task 2)

Important Note: If you feel that someone in your group is not contributing adequately or the group dynamics are not working well, you are allowed to split the group. However, I strongly recommend deciding to split as early as possible to ensure both new groups have enough time to complete the assessment effectively. The newly formed groups can choose to stick with the same topic as your original group. However, if you choose the same topic, make sure to coordinate and avoid content overlap and plagiarism issues between the two groups. Alternatively, you can opt for a different topic that aligns with the guidelines. You don’t need to inform me about the group split if you have followed all the guidelines.

4.2.If you are working Individually:

  • 100% of your final mark is based on your individual contribution to all Tasks.

Further details with marking grids about each of these tasks grading are available on the following pages:
