Learning Outcome 1: Identify key elements of poetry and explain how they function in poems.

Answer:

Like any other literature, poetry may be analysed into numerous devices. The most known is rhyme, but dozens of others are used to create a poem. Even though the number of poets that consciously employ these tools is very high, most of them are long-standing members of their repertoire, though still most poets are able to recognise them and perceive their impact on their work.

In this paper, we discuss eight of the most prevalent poetic devices and their worth.

  • Rhyme and rhyme scheme: The first device that is thought of when we think about poetry is rhyme. It is poetry from Mother Goose stories to the work of the greats. It is not so frequently employed by modern poets as by their predecessors, but it is also fundamental to the essence of poetry.
  • Meter: Meter is the basic form of a line, with stressed and unstressed syllables that abide by a pattern to form rhythm. It is an epitome of a poem, in a way.
  • Lineation: Layout is also referred to as lineation and deals with the actual physical arrangement of sentences and words on the page. Although poetry may be best experienced in a read aloud, it is a visual art also; the layout of the words influences pause, changes mood, meaning or rhythm.
  • Form: It is defined as the general form of a poem and is composed of rhyme scheme, meter and lineation.
  • Theme: A poem needs a theme. Poetry can be about your breakfast or the love of your life, but it is alive with a deeper meaning. Simply put, a poem is defined by its theme, which is the message that the poem aims to deliver.
  • Metaphor: A metaphor is the comparison of two things or concepts without the use of like or as but in a straightforward manner. An example can be given of hope is a thing with feathers as opposed to hope is like a thing with feathers.
  • Alliteration: There is also alliteration, which is a repeating sound of a consonant at the beginning of some words- e.g., Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Keep in mind: the device is a particular sound, and thus two words that begin with the same letter do not always have alliteration.
  • Tone: The tone or the mood of a poem is its attitude by the poet towards the subject. Poems, similar to human feelings, can be joyful, melancholic, remorseful, nostalgic, furious, and others. The tone is conveyed in rhyme, figurative language, meter, and syntax, among others

Learning Outcome 2:  Show how poetic language and form produce meaning in poems.

Answer:

Poetic language and form are one of the most crucial components of a poem, as they help exactly communicate the message of the poem.  For this, poets often use figurative language, which includes similes and metaphors, this is to create vivid descriptions, which mainly allows the readers to imagine the message that the poem is giving with proper visualisation in their head.

Poetic forms are also the same; terms like ottava rime, iambs are used so that the poem should be able to present its right tone, message effectively. The help of rhyme, meter, and structural division is taken so that a poet can express different emotions of feelings. In the last, using both poetic language and form in a creative poet can convey any message in the same sense they want to deliver. Everyone who reads that poem understands the meaning in the same manner, without any direct explanation or using simple language.

Learning Outcome 3: Discuss the treatment of themes and issues in poems

Answer:

If you ask any poet, they will tell you that poetry is not just part of language; it's basically an art that allows poets to express a wide range of issues and themes with the help of their poems. How many issues or themes can be discussed depends on the imagination of poets.
Every poet has their own techniques of discussing these topics.

Some of them focus on using the rhythmic tone, which creates a lyrical effect for driving their main point in their poem, while many prefer going with concrete imagery, which helps them in drawing out the complex emotion directly from their readers.

The main aim of the writers is to bring their readers into an emotional stage; they want to feel every emotion that they are putting while writing the poem. They do not want their audience to simply read the words without feeling anything. With the help of issues and themes in a creative manner, writers want their audience to get attached to the story, and they must remember connecting between emotions and words of the poem so that it can give them a next-level experience.

Learning Outcome 4: Assess poems through critical analysis of their literary features.

Answer:

Critically analysing a poem simply means discovering the accurate intention of the poet behind writing that poem, and analysing what elements they have used to convey that intention. This can only be done when you dive deep into the writing of a poet; you cannot analyse their literary feature using going through surface features. You need to look for meter, their point of view, form, figurative language, and what tone they are using.

You need to examine the complete poem with each literary feature, and even with each other, so that you can obtain a clear understanding of how the poem functions. By this analysis, anyone can easily understand how all these literary features work together and give a result that is exactly the way the poet wanted to. This analysis will also get you a prediction of how this poem will work on your readers.

Learning Outcome 5: Examine the thematic and stylistic effects of key poetic conventions and forms in poems.

Answer:

The analysis of the main poetic conventions shows the thematic and stylistic implications. Iambic pentameter, rhyme pattern, stanza form, and personification are metrical devices that assist poets in creating graphic descriptions of the human condition. These aspects are emotional appeals that reach the readers. The methods like enjambment and punctuation may alter the meaning, or they may drive a point. Combining these two, poets can present strong themes and yet use only a short language.

Learning Outcome 6: Compare the treatment of themes and issues in poems.

Answer:

A poem is basically a medium of art that allows writers to convey a wide range of concerns and themes. The treatment of these topics is done in quite a different manner, even when the subject matter is the same, a different treatment will be done. Such poems are the ones which are richly iced with extraordinary imagery and symbolism for emphasising finer points, whereas others are sharp and straightforward. Most poets explore the impulse behind their themes to ensure that their readers or audience realise the importance of these themes.

Conversely, other poems are the ones that have a light tone, or even they are more comedic to a point that it does not appear to be serious at some point. So basically, there is no such perfect set of rules that you must follow. To make your poem perfect, you need to deal with a lot of themes, depending on your poem. Lastly, there is a very big room for showing your creativity in your poem.
