Unit 4008 Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario

As the Mechanical Engineer at a manufacturing facility, you are responsible for ensuring the efficient and reliable operation of all mechanical systems and equipment on-site. A key aspect of your role involves identifying and solving problems related to static mechanical systems, such as support structures, load-bearing assemblies, and stationary machinery components. Your expertise is critical in diagnosing mechanical failures, recommending appropriate repairs, and applying engineering principles to restore and enhance the performance of these systems.

In addition, you are required to analyze dynamic mechanical systems, including rotating machinery, conveyors, and other moving components integral to the production process. This involves assessing motion, forces, vibrations, and energy transfer within mechanical assemblies to identify inefficiencies and prevent breakdowns. Your ability to interpret dynamic behavior ensures optimal performance and longevity of factory equipment.

Beyond maintenance and troubleshooting, your role also includes the design and development of new machinery or mechanical subsystems tailored to evolving production needs. This entails close collaboration with production teams, feasibility analysis, and the creation of detailed technical specifications and drawings. Your innovative contributions support the continuous improvement of manufacturing operations and the integration of advanced engineering solutions.

You are also expected to uphold safety standards and ensure compliance with industry regulations. Additionally, you manage budgets, procure necessary parts, and coordinate with external suppliers and service providers. Your multifaceted responsibilities are essential to maintaining high operational standards and driving the long-term success and sustainability of the manufacturing plant.

Part 1

(a) Square Beam AB having the circular hollow cross-section as shown in Figure Q4a and it is loaded as shown in in Figure Q1b. If the beam material density is 8500kg/m3.
i) Draw the freebody diagram for the beam.
ii) Obtain the equations for shear force in each segment of the beam
iii) Draw the shear force diagram
iv) Obtain the equations for bending moment develop for each segment of the beam
v) Draw the bending moment diagram for the beam
vi) Calculate the maximum bending stress developed.

(b)
i) Select a beam from ISO standard rolled steel beams to replace above beam (Part1 (a)) and justify your selection.
ii) A 5m hight and both end pin supported column has the cross-section of Figure P1(a). Calculate the maximum axial load that can be apply on the column without buckling failure. Also select a suitable beam cross section from standard rolled steel cross section to replace the above column and justify your selection.

(c) A shaft has an external diameter (ED) of 350 mm and an internal diameter of 150 mm.

i) Calculate the maximum shear stress in the shaft when it is transmitting 4700 kW at 100 rpm.
ii) Find the angle of twist in a length of 20 x ED. (Assume G-80GN/m2).
iii) If the hollow shaft is replaced by a solid shaft of the same weight and length, what power can
it transmit for the same maximum shear stress?
iv) Draw the shear stress distribution on shaft cross section for both the cases.

Part 2

(a) A drum is made to revolve about its centre by a falling mass as shown in Figure P2(a) (assume no frictional losses).
i. Analys and find the relationship between stored energy in the drum and length of the mass descends.
ii. Plot the relationship descend length against energy gained. Iii.
iii.Using the developed relationship calculate the velocity of the falling mass and rotating drum when the mass descends 20 m. Also calculate the energy gained by the drum.

(b) A ship has a turbine engine installed such that its axis of rotation is aligned along the length of the ship. The engine rotates at 6000 revolutions per minute (rpm) in a clockwise direction when viewed from the rear of the ship. The engine's rotating mass is 900 kg, and its radius of gyration is 0.5 m.

The ship is turning to the right (starboard side) along a circular path with a radius of 300 meters at a forward speed of 2.2 m/s.

i. Calculate the magnitude of the gyroscopic couple generated during the turn.
ii.Analys the effect of this gyroscopic couple on the ship's stability and motion.

(c) In a slider crank mechanism, the crank and the connecting rod are 150mm and 400mm long respectively. The crank rotates at 360 r.p.m in clockwise direction.

When the crank has turned through 60° using the velocity diagram method determine

i. Velocity and the acceleration of the slider
ii. Angular velocity of the connecting rod.
iii. Velocity of point C on the connecting rod which is 300mm away from the poit A.
iv.  Position of any point on connecting rod which has the minimum velocity.
V. Analys and interpret the how the dynamic behaviour of the mechanism changes if
