Broadly speaking, the assignment requires you to attend an online oral examination with two markers. You will present a demonstration of your artefact, and then answer any questions.

The assignment is described in more detail in section 2.

This is an individual assignment.

If you have questions about this assignment, please post them to the discussion board “FAQs: Viva” on Blackboard. This can be found under Learning Materials > 24Sep (2024-25) > Learning Materials by Questions > WHAT you will need to produce (Deliverables) > Deliverable 3. Viva.

UFCF9Y-60-M Viva Section 2: Task Specification

You will be required to attend a viva voce (oral examination) with two members of staff. You will be asked questions about your work, particularly focussing on the artefact that you have produced. The viva is your opportunity to highlight the functionality/features/benefits of your artefact and to demonstrate your understanding of your chosen topic.

The viva will last for 15-30 minutes and will allow academics to ask you questions about your project. This will be a demonstration of your product (artefact), followed by questions and answers. You are not expected to prepare a presentation or slides.

  • You should be prepared to run your artefact/application (on a shared screen), showing its features, purpose and limitations. Do not be afraid to describe things that don’t work, and why.
  • You should aim to achieve this in 5 minutes or less

These are the sort of questions you should prepare for, although the examiner may ask more detailed technical questions about your project:

  • What have you done? Describe your project succinctly.
  • Why did you do this project? What was the real-life problem you were trying to address? Why did you choose to do it this way?
  • How did you create your artefact/system? What process did you follow?
  • Who did you read in order to underpin your work? Which literature did you read, and how did you find it?
  • Where would you go next with this work? What would you develop, given more time and resources? What doesn’t work well (or at all) and what would you do to remedy it?

All Vivas will be recorded.
