SSU1023 Task Instruction

This task requires you to review and analyze contemporary social issue based on the topic provided. The analysis should demonstrate key insights and effectively apply the anthropology and sociology concepts learned in the course.

1. You are required to work in a group of 5 members.
2. Your group is required to choose ONE topic from the list below:

Students are assessed based on a standard FSSH essay-writing rubric. Based on these rubrics, the students are assessed according to the following criteria:

1. Introduction
2. Content
3. Organisation
4. Language
5. Referencing/Citation 6. Conclusion

INTRODUCTION (10%)

What is the central theme/thesis addressed in the topic? Did you provide a problem statement to discuss the topic (eg., what are the arguments presented in different literature related to the topic- and which ones are you going to discuss?) Have you organised and structured the points of arguments you wish to discuss in your essay?

CONTENT (30%)

Comprehension: Understand the topic - where does the topic come from? Some topics are summaries or statements taken from a reading-you MUST read the full chapter or article from which this statement or summary originate from.

Comprehension: Understand the readings- what are the arguments put forward by the different authors? What are their research questions/central themes of their articles/books/chapters? What are the issues they addressed and why are these issues important in their writings? How do different authors argue their points and what are the specific case studies/examples they use to enhance their arguments? How would you apply these in your own essay?

Strengths of arguments: How solid are your own arguments based on what you have read did you do enough (relevant) readings to create an argument? Why did you choose certain authors and arguments over others to be discussed in your essay? How consistent are these arguments over time? Do these arguments have numerous supports from other authors - you need to provide related examples for this.

Maturity: How did you discuss these arguments with your group member? How to these readings relate to and how do you apply these concepts to your observations and experiences? How do you proceed with your discussions/arguments despite disagreements with your group member? What are the creative approaches you use to understand the readings and the authors' main arguments? What does it take for you and your group member to think out of the box when presenting the arguments? What is the 'wow factor' in your essay to pull the reader's attention?

ORGANISATION (10%)

Is your writing structured according to the points you laid out in your introduction? How do you prioritize your arguments? Do your arguments relate directly to the topic and arguments presented in the different literature? Are your arguments and writing organised in a way that it flows from one point to another- are they all connected?
