SOMS3232 Assessment Description Rationale

The pre-seminar blog entry requires students to extract information from multiple sources to arrive at an initial understanding of fundamental concepts. This will prepare you for the weekly seminar, where these concepts are explored in more depth. The post-seminar comments require reflection and discussion skills. Taken together these skills are fundamental for researchers who constantly need to engage with recent advances through the literature and discussion with colleagues to be able to propose hypotheses, models and experimental approaches to for basic discovery and research translation.

SOMS3232 Task description

You will keep an ePortfolio on Moodle (reflective journal). Entries will be guided by the material (online and/or literature) and a set of questions on Moodle. The weekly entry consists of two components:

1. Pre-seminar blog post (limit of 750 words plus references): You will individually answer the questions posted by the lecturer before the corresponding seminar. At this stage you can only see your own entry.
2.  Post-seminar comments: You can now read everybody's posts and are expected to reflect on the topic after the seminar.

Students are expected to post a comment on their own pre-seminar blog entries.

Marking: 10 marks (Individual) per weekly entry broken down into the two components
8 marks for the pre-seminar blog post
2 marks for post-seminar comment
The top five weekly marks (from the eight blog entries from weeks 2-5, 7-10) are counted towards the total mark (out of 50 marks) for this assessment task.
