SOC4005 Assignment Task 

Part A 

Drawing on your media diaries, write a reflective blog (1000 words +/- 10%) that explores your media use over this term, applying key concepts, debates and theories from the module to examine the role and impact of media in your personal media use. You should use key texts provided throughout the module to inform your reflective account, and you may write in the first person. You must reference your blog throughout and give a reference list. 

Part B 

Demonstrate your ability to effectively communicate by creating a media product. 

This can take the form of a: 

  • Blog (approx. 1000 words)
  • Vlog (approx. 5 minutes)
  • Podcast (approx. 5 minutes) 

Your media product should debate and discuss power and inequalities about one of the following topics: 

  • The representation of one social group within media (e.g. women, young people, migrants)
  • Media representation of a contemporary social issue (e.g. crime, health, welfare benefits)
  • The blurring of the public and private realms in new media
  • Digital media, social activism and democracy
  • Issues around media influence 

You should also include a 100-word summary that states who your target audience is and evidence of why this style of communication would be most effective at engaging your target audience. You must reference your media product throughout and give a reference list.
