a) Write an explanation of terms- cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation, and explain when & why each method is used. (3 Marks)
b) Describe the 4 levels of infection risk that areas can fall into in a healthcare setting, give examples of the areas and explain how often each area should be cleaned. (2 marks)
c) Give examples of 5 various items of equipment used in a healthcare setting and explain how often they should be cleaned. (1 Marks)
d) Complete the quiz and skills demonstration as directed (4 Marks)
2. Demonstrate the difference between social hand hygiene, antiseptic hand hygiene and surgical hand hygiene to include the correct use of alcohol hand gels and the need for good personal skin care and efficient hand washing. (10 Marks)
a) Write a brief explanation of the difference between social hand hygiene, antiseptic hand hygiene and surgical hand hygiene. (2 Marks)
b) Complete the quiz and skills demonstration as directed (8 Marks)
3. Implement the local terminal cleaning procedure in a range of settings, such as an isolation room, single use items and outbreak management. (10 Marks)
a) Draw up guidelines for new staff on how to sterilise an isolation room. Should include – when to conduct a terminal clean; items to be gathered before starting; recommended products to be used; safe preparation of the product; choice of PPEs; method of conducting a terminal clean; knowledge of correct disposal of linen, equipment & healthcare risk waste from the room. (6 Marks)
b) Explain the difference between sterilising an isolation room and cleaning a low risk area, for example a staff changing area. (1 Mark)
c) Choose 1 single use item from a healthcare environment and explain how it should be used in terms of infection prevention and control and how to dispose of it correctly. Explain how single use items help the prevention of infection and cross infection (1 Marks)
d) Describe the healthcare worker’s role in terms of the management of outbreaks within a healthcare setting. Include duty & responsibilities, reporting relationship, local policy. (2 Marks)
4. Demonstrate the application of appropriate management of blood and body fluid spillages, to include policies for dealing with clean and soiled linen, the disposal of sharps and the correct management following inoculation, injury or accidental exposure to blood and body fluids. (10 marks)
a) Design a policy for clean and soiled linen, include knowledge of the national colour coding system. (2 Marks)
b) Design a policy for dealing with the disposal of sharps. (2 Marks)
c) Design a policy for dealing with the correct management, following inoculation, injury or accidental exposure to blood and body fluids. (2 Marks)
d) Complete the quiz and skills demonstration as directed (4 Marks)
