Preparation for Graduate Practice (PGP) Assessment Brief

Assessment Task Details and Instructions

You are required to prepare and deliver a presentation, 20 minutes in duration. 15-minute presentation and 5 minutes for questions. You should present your work using PowerPoint, using a maximum of 16 slides, including your reference list.
 
The purpose of this assessment is to encourage you to link theory with practice and demonstrate your ability to:
  • Explore a current issue and its influence in practice
  • Discuss the nature of your own practice within the global healthcare context.
  • Consider the political, socioeconomic, and other significant perspectives that may affect their practice in relation to the issue chosen.
Please choose an issue from one of the following: -
  • Supervision and assessment of students
  • Advanced care planning
  • Assisted dying
  • Digital health
  • Public health
  • Health promotion
  • Safeguarding
NB. Some of the above topics have many aspects, e.g. Safeguarding covers many topics - adult safeguarding, child protection, modern slavery, trafficking…. Choose one aspect only.
 
Your Presentation should follow the following structure:
Title slide
Should include your name and roll number.
Title of your current issue in relation to professional practice.
 
Introduction approx. 3 slides
Aim of the presentation
Give a brief overview of your area of practice.
Identify a current issue that has implications for professional practice. Give a rationale for your choice of issue.
 
Main Body approx. 8 slides
  • Explore your chosen issue in relation to your practice area.
  • Evaluate the impact that your issue has on practice.
  • Compare the issue globally by evaluating the influence your chosen issue has in the practice arena.
  • Consider the ethical implications for practice.
  • Explore barriers to your issue; this could include political, socioeconomic, religious beliefs, and values.
Conclusion approx. 2 slides
Briefly summarise what has already gone before and reiterate key points on how the Issue can influence professional practice. Discuss solutions and recommendations for professional practice.
 
Reference list approx 2 x slides
All references cited in the presentation must appear in the reference list and be cited as per University guidelines. (NB the reference list is not included in the word count). Please follow the link for more guidance APA 7th edition | University of Salford
 
Approximate Slides is a guide, but in total, there should be a maximum of 16 slides.
Patient Confidentiality:
The NMC code (2018) states that a nurse must respect people's right to privacy and confidentiality (Section 5). In accordance with this, it is crucial to emphasise that, under no circumstances, should you permit the identification of a patient in your submitted work. In the case of students who do not take the utmost care to protect patient confidentiality, the submitted assignment may be classed as a referral.

Assessment Criteria

Marks for your assessment will be allocated based on the Level 6 Grade descriptors. The way the marks will be allocated is specifically laid out in the marking criteria under each section. The detailed marking descriptors are available on the module BB site within the assessment folder, alongside the assessment brief and supporting assessment guidance. You can find the Level 6 grade descriptors on Blackboard. You should look at the assessment criteria to find out what we are specifically looking for during the assessment.

  • Apply and analyse the evidence base underpinning the delivery of effective current practice.
  • Apply current evidence and discuss implications for professional practice in the global context.

  • Apply a range of communication strategies in a format appropriate to a variety of situations discuss the outcome of these.
  • Work cooperatively within a team/learning group.
  • Discuss assessment, selection, and application of specific evidence/research relevant to practice.
  • Identify and critically appraise the quality of research/evidence in relation to current issues.
  • Use a range of information technology/well-defined techniques to collect appropriate evidence relevant to practice.
  • Competent use of digital technology to support practice.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills
  • Take responsibility for one's own learning and personal development.

Presentation Preparation Session
 
PFS There will be a timetabled session on presentation skills, including how to use the Microsoft Teams session at the beginning of the module.
PFS: Each student will have the opportunity to meet with their academic supervisor on Microsoft Teams to present their introduction slides. Feedback will be given re choice of issue and guidance on presentation skills.
 
Presentation Skills
 
PFS Each timetabled session will have a group student activity and feedback opportunity. By the end of the module, it is expected that each student will have the opportunity to give feedback/present to the larger group.

Reassessment

If you fail your assessment and are eligible for reassessment, you will need to be sent an invitation for a second attempt week commencing 22/06/2026. You will need to resubmit your presentation via Turnitin on Blackboard by 16:00 on Friday, 19/06/2026.
 
For students with accepted personal mitigating circumstances for absence/non-submission, this will be your replacement assessment attempt.
 
The reassessment is the same as the original summative assessment task
