Scientific Paper

What Knowledge and/or skills will I develop by undertaking the Assessment?

The purpose of the scientific paper is for students to 

• Evaluate data and results from an extended independent programme of laboratory-based research to produce a paper.
• Undertake research with minimal supervision.
• Critically appraise the work done in the form of a thesis, including relating conclusions to relevant theory and other published work in the field.

What is expected of me in This Assessment?

Students should prepare a scientific paper.

1. Scientific paper

Guidance on the format and structure of the paper has been provided in the Study Guide and template on Moodle.

Instructions

Using the template provided, write a scientific paper on your project data collection. Guidance on the content, formatting and structure is in the Study Guide template on Moodle. I would like you to please provide additional guidance on this from your supervisor.

Page Count

The literature review should not exceed 12 pages of content. If the page count of submitted work is above the specified page limit by more than 10% the penalty will be that the grade for the submission will be reduced to the next lowest grade. This will be recorded on the Feedback Grid.

Formatting Requirements

A template has been provided on Moodle; this should be used to write the paper. 

References

A reference section should follow the acknowledgements section. All references should be relevant to the project and should be in the University (RGU), Harvard, or Vancouver styles. 

Submission Information

The review should be submitted to the drop box on Moodle on the date and time specified. There will be an opportunity to submit a draft report for formative feedback before the final submission date.

Presentation and Oral Defence

What knowledge and/or skills will I develop by undertaking the assessment?

The purpose of the presentation is for students to –

• Demonstrate competence in oral defence of the project.
