Suggested Approach

Write your response in the form of a visual essay that uses images and long descriptions to convey your researched (and citable) observations and opinions. Hence, the visual essay must be organised to allow the argument to come through clearly and coherently to the reader. When writing, keep in mind your audience (for example, who is this visual essay for?). The essay must adopt basic formality, i.e., presented in complete and grammatically sound sentences.

The core components of the essay are:

  • Usually one paragraph. States your claim/argument, with a brief outline of the supporting reasons or rationale for taking the position/argument you have chosen. *Make sure your stated position/argument directly addresses the question asked, and that it goes beyond a simple “I agree with…” or “I disagree with…”.
  • Paragraphs developing your outlined reasons or rationale in the introductory paragraph, with relevant and clearly substantiated examples. A good way to start is to discuss one idea or argument per paragraph. The images used and their long descriptions should be well integrated into your discussion. The PEEL principle may be useful to follow:
  • Point (specific point / argument you want to make)
  • Providing an Example for that point or argument (this is most likely where your images come in)
  • Explaining why the example is relevant to the point / argument you are making, and
  • Link it back to your overarching argument your essay is making.

Conclusion. Usually in one paragraph, which reiterates your position. Can also be used as a space for reflection on the broader themes that your specific examples engaged with in the essay. This also signals to your readers that you are ending your discussion.
