Aims and Objectives

This assignment aims to reinforce your understanding of the theoretical concepts module as applied in practice and gain essential employability skills. By applying your knowledge and skills to provide advice to the board, you will be able to experience the meaning of theoretical concepts when applied in practice and be able to advise with confidence. 

Task 

Critically evaluate the factors that management and the board of directors should consider when assessing a company's prospects for decision making purposes. 

Assignment

In groups, you are required to write a 2,500 word report for management and the board of directors, based on critical analysis and evaluation of a case study of a fictional manufacturing company, computing relevant costs, illustrating your calculations, expressing the assumptions of your analysis and make relevant recommendations to the owner for decision making purposes. You are expected to critically evaluate your arguments, with both quantitative and qualitative factors, concluding with reasoned recommendations, fully supported by the evidence.

Each section will be assessed for knowledge, understanding, accuracy, research, effort, writing quality, presentation and referencing and a mark awarded for overall performance based on the Marking Criteria at the end of the document. 

You should also include a short paragraph discussing how your group coordinated your work, ensuring that you submitted a cohesive report, with all members participating and preparing a report which has flow and links between subsections. Evidence of cohesion and teamwork may be demonstrated by using Blackboard tools such as Bb Collaborate, File Exchange, Group Discuss Board and Group Tasks or other methods, for example, Microsoft Teams tools, WhatsApp and Google Doc's. Group Formation

Each group has up to 6 members, chosen by you. You must pick your own group members by signing up on the excel sheet provided by Tuesday 11th February 2025. If you have not joined a group, I will allocate you to a group and email you on Friday 14thFebruary 2025. 

Requirements

Using the case below, prepare a 2,500-word report, in English, excluding references and appendices. A 10% (+/-) variation in word length is permissible (word counts are suggestions to ensure an appropriate balance). It can be divided into sections as noted below. Word counts are for guidance to ensure a balanced report. The critical analysis is not merely an explanation of the case study, but you should demonstrate your ability to critically evaluate and use information and knowledge to support your arguments.

  • Contemporary developments in management accounting practice;
  • The emerging management accounting techniques, and how these are applied;
  • Theoretical perspectives on various dimensions of the subject.

  • Critically explain, apply and evaluate contemporary management accounting techniques in particular organisations;
  • Evaluate alternative (e.g., economic, social, cultural and political) contexts within which management accounting operates;

C. Transferable and Generic Skills 

  • Demonstrate analysis and syntheses of management accounting case studies and related material;
  • Demonstrate team skills;
  • Work independently as well as in groups, including time management and developing effective and efficient study techniques, and the use of library resources.
