LSC-2004 Assessment Details

You are required to produce a reflective portfolio of 3 x 500-word reflections on interprofessional education, health & safety and quality management systems. Once you have completed your portfolio, you should select which of the reflections you would like to be marked. You must complete all three reflections to receive a mark for this work.

There is a campus-based tutorial on each of these reflections. You should spend 2-3 hours before the tutorial researching this subject, attend the campus-based based, and you will then have2-3 weeks to write up your reflection.

1. Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Communication: How does Interprofessional Education prepare you for working as part of a team in the NHS?’

Hint: What does the literature say about IPE and Interprofessional working (IPW) in a healthcare setÝng? Do any regulatory or professional bodies refer to/require IPE/IPW? How did you feel before and after the IPE day? Did your opinions change? How will this impact your future practice? How critical is good communication for healthcare providers?

2. Health and Safety: Have H&S regulations created safer workspaces?

Hint: Ask yourself: why is it necessary to have such extensive regulations? Does this automatically create a safer environment? Does the regulation place the responsibility on the employer or the employee? Consider your experiences with health and safety training and instruction. Are there flaws in the system?

3. Quality Management Systems and Assurance: Does an effective Quality Management system remove errors from a workplace?

Hint: Think about the goals of a quality management system, what is required for it to be ‘effective’? What are the limitations, and can a ‘perfect’ error-free workplace be achieved?

What to Include

Specific hints for each piece of reflection are given above. In addition, the following generic guidance applies to all three pieces:

  • Identify relevant legal, regulatory, and professional frameworks as appropriate.
  • Define key terms and concepts.
  • Outline the main impact/implications and current limitations. This will need to be evidence-based, so do remember to include appropriate facts and findings from the wider literature. Graphs, figures, and tables can help to present rich data sets without compromising your overall word count.
  • Critically reflect on what this means to you. Your reflections could come from different perspectives, for example, as a student, employee, future healthcare practitioner, patient, friend or family member of a patient, or as a taxpayer subsiding the NHS. Professional reflective practice should also link to the wider literature, where relevant, to promote an evidence-based approach to clinical practice.
  • References, citations, and bibliography. All references and citations should be provided using the Harvard referencing system. Your reference section does not count towards your overall word count, but in-text citations do.

You may find the following self-help videos (also available on KLE) useful when completing this assignment:

  • Different Sources of Information
  • How to Use the Harvard Reference System & Good Academic Practice
  • Critical Thinking and Insight
  • : How to Use Figures and Tables

LSC-2004 Module Learning Outcomes:

LSC-2004 Assessment Criteria:

Your work will be assessed against the University’s Generic Marking Criteria for Undergraduate programmes. We will also be using LSC 20040 Reflective Portfolio marking criteria, which is based on this generic marking criteria. The rubric gives further insight into how the generic marking criteria will be applied to this piece of work and will give you better indication of your strengths and weaknesses for feedback purposes. This will be particularly helpful for those of you wanting to improve your marks as you progress across your programme.

More information is also provided on the module KLE page under the assessments tab.

Feedback to Students:

Feedback will be provided by 17th March 2025. It will be provided as annotations throughoutyour work on your Turnitin submissions and will also provide generic feedback such as strengths, weaknesses and ways to improve. You are encouraged to engage with this feedback to help you with future submissions.

Inclusive Practice:

This assessment has been explicitly designed to be inclusive in several ways:

1. Flexibility. Allowing you to choose which of the three pieces of reflection to mark allows you to critically reflect on your performance and play to your strengths. This can also improve motivation and overall performance.

2. Academic Support. We will introduce the assessment during our welcome talk and reflective writing workshop in week 1. Each of three pieces of reflection will also be supported with specific interactive lectures throughout the semester. We strongly encourage you to raise any questions or concerns you may have during these teaching activities. The Academic and Digital Skills team provide a range of additionalonline resources (e.g., study guides, Sways, Podcasts, workshops etc) to help you with your academic work and assessments. You can find more information here.

3. Time Management. Although there is a single deadline, we have spaced out the supporting interactive tutorials across semester 1. We strongly encourage you to complete each piece of reflection within 2 weeks of the supporting lecture to help you manage your time more effectively across the year.

4. Assistive Technologies. We do allow the use of assistive technologies such as Grammarly when completing this assignment. Grammarly is a cloud-based programme that can be integrated into Microsoft Word and will make suggestions to rephrase sentences that will improve your writing. This can be particularly useful for students with dyslexia or students whose first language is not English.

5. Exceptional Circumstances (ECs). You can apply for an automatic, 7-day extension through the EC system. Students with a specific learning need, as identified through Disability Support and Inclusion, are not subject to the usual limit of 3 extension requests per semester.  Alternatively, you can apply for another assessment opportunity, but you will need appropriate supporting evidence of an unforeseen, acute event that is impacting your ability to engage with your studies.
