Module Aims

This module will provide students with critical understanding of the way in which leadership, management and human resources interact within event organisations. It seeks to encourage student to be aware of the relationship between corporate strategies and human resources strategies and policies within an international context. It will inform students how to manage and lead event work forces, including the HR strategies available to supervising event volunteers.

Module Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically explore the relationship between corporate strategies and human resources strategies and policies within the international events industry.
  2. Explain the relationship between leadership, management, human resources strategies and performance in event organisations.
  3. Analyse the operational and strategic claims regarding volunteering in the events sector and how it is led and managed
  4. Critically evaluate strategic human resources management literature and its applicability to the characteristics of the events sector.

Students will prepare a conference poster which evaluates how best practice people resourcing OR training and development is used to manage precarious workers OR volunteers within the events industry.  Your poster can focus on one sector within the events industry e.g. sport events; festivals; meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).  

  • A short introduction to the sector of the industry you have chosen.
  • A short introduction to the use of precarious workers OR volunteers within the events industry.
  • Outline best practice people resourcing OR training and development.
  • Critical evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen area of best practice HRM (people resourcing OR training and development) to manage your chosen group of staff (precarious workers ORvolunteers).
  • Your poster presentation should also consider any relevant issues relating to EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion).
  • Provide recommendations to event organisations relating to the application of best practice HRM.

The content of your poster should be underpinned by academic literature all correctly referenced using Leeds Beckett Harvard referencing.

The poster must incorporate graphic elements with some text, but should not be text heavy, and be anchored in key academic discussions relevant to their chosen HR process.  Information should be presented in a visually engaging way.  Graphical elements could include tables, models, graphs, charts and images.  The poster should be one item (i.e., not a series of smaller posters), and the dimensions of the poster must be A2.
