JXH4403 Supplementary Assessment 

Important: This assignment is only for students who have been informed by the student admin to complete a supplementary assessment for this module.

A coach is interested in determining whether the type of stretching (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation or Passive Stretching) and sex (male or female) influence response to a flexibility training programme in young adults. The coach was particularly interested in hamstring flexibility and the young adults’ perceptions of the programme. The coach approached a sports scientist at Bangor University to help design an empirical study to answer this question.

Imagine you are a sports scientist. Please write:

A research design section, including (approximately one page):

• A title
• A quantitative aim and a qualitative aim
• A quantitative hypothesis and a qualitative hypothesis
• Study design (including a description of the overall study design as given by Page, 2012, table 1).
• Sampling method (note: a power calculation is not required)
• Randomisation and blinding

A proposed quantitative statistical analysis plan, including identification of (approximately one page):

• Independent and dependent variables
• The specific analysis (i.e., which analysis you would select in SPSS)
• Any relevant assumptions and tests of such assumptions
• The tests of any relevant hypotheses (including how you will make decisions to accept or reject such hypotheses)
• Any relevant follow-up tests

A proposed qualitative analysis plan, including (approximately one page):

• The choice of methodology (e.g., ethnography, phenomenology, or grounded theory)
• Data collection method
• Analytical approach
• Any potential ethical issues and the steps that will be adopted to ensure transparency and improve trustworthiness

To achieve a pass mark (C-), students must select appropriate methodologies and the correct analytical approaches to ensure threats to internal, external and statistical validity are adequately controlled to ensure conclusions made by the sport scientist will be generally accepted.

Your marker will ignore any content that is 10% over the word limit, e.g. they will not mark any work beyond 2,200 words.
