In addition to roadway cross-sections, stationing is also fundamental to highway plans (as well as many other fields of Civil Engineering). A station is the horizontal measurement along the 'Construction Survey Line' of a project, an example of which is shown in the attached drawing (Highway.pdf), which shows a segment of Highway 49 between Highway 15 and Airport/Bayshore road.
In this drawing, highway stationing uses 1,000 m (1 km) intervals, which can be compared to a rope having knots 1,000 meters apart from one another. The beginning of the rope would be 0 (written 0+000), the first knot at 1,000 m would be Station No. 1 and would be written as 1+000. The second station number would be 2 (which is 2,000 m from the beginning) and would be written as 2+000, and so on. There are also intermediate stations, which in this drawing are at 100 m intervals. For example, station 25+200 is located 200 m from station 25 (written 25+000).

Station numbers usually increase from the beginning of the project to the end of the project with the convention of West to East (or South to North). The beginning station of a project can be assumed or referenced to a previous project. If assumed, it generally starts with 10+000 or 100+000. If there was a project for this road in the past, the beginning station number may be much higher, for example, this drawing begins with station 25+100.
In some cases, the Station Numbering scheme may change along the length of a highway. For example, the figure below shows a change in Station Numbering at Station 26+300. On the drawing, AHEAD means in the direction in which Station Numbers increase (usually towards the end of the project), and BACK means in the direction in which the station numbers decrease (usually towards the beginning of the project).
To relate a system of stationing to another system, equalities are used to describe the point on a construction centreline where the station numbers of a system change to another (example shown below). In the figure below, 26+301.865 BACK = 10+000 AHEAD.
The length of the project in meters could be calculated by subtracting the beginning station from the ending station and multiplying by 1000. For example, if a project begins at station 50 (written50+00) and ends at station 89 (written 89+00), the length is 89000 - 50000 = 39,000 m (39 km). For intermediate stations, the same approach is taken, but the numbers after the '+' symbol are added onto the end, for example, the distance between stations 25+100 and 26+200 is 26200 - 25100 = 1100 m (1.1 km).
Using the drawing Highway.pdf, determine the following:
1. The distance between stations 25+100 and 26+100.
2. The distance between station 25+100 and the intersection of Highway 15.
3. The distance between station 26+300 and the intersection of Airport/Bayshore Road.
