This task involves gathering digital evidence, interpreting findings, and presenting a comprehensive report that demonstrates their forensic investigation skills.

Assessment Details

Assessment Purpose

The purpose of this assessment is to assess the understanding and application of digital forensic techniques in analysing and reporting on cybercrime incidents.

You are a digital forensics investigator assigned to a cybercrime case involving unauthorised access to a company's network. The company suspects that an insider may have stolen sensitive data and tampered with financial records.

Your task is to investigate the incident, identify the culprit, and provide a detailed report.

Assessment Instructions

In this assessment, you will need to complete the following steps:

1. Introduction to Digital Forensics (20% marks):

  • Explain the role of digital forensics in investigating cybercrimes.
  • Discuss the importance of preserving evidence and maintaining the integrity of the investigation process.

2. Investigation Process (30% marks):

  • Describe the digital forensic tools and techniques you would use to investigate the incident.
  • Outline the steps you would take to collect, preserve, and analyse digital evidence.
  • Identify the potential sources of evidence (e.g., logs, emails, files, etc.) and explain how you would examinethem.

3. Findings and Analysis (30% marks):

  • Present your findings based on the evidence collected. Identify the perpetrator (if possible) and explain how the evidence supports your conclusion.
  • Discuss any challenges faced during the investigation and how you overcame them.

4. Conclusion and Recommendations (20% marks):

  • Summarise your findings and conclusions.
  • Provide recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
  • Suggest improvements to the company's cybersecurity practices based on the investigation.
