The Facilitation of Learning in Practice (HNU 301)

As part of this module, you are required to submit one written assignment demonstrating your learning and academic skills gained throughout the module.

Submission deadline for the assignment is 13:00hrs on the Day 6 (Monday) of Week 8

Submission is in CANVAS (Via Turnitin) as a word document.

When completing your assignment please check your work against the marking criteria provided.

Module Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module and to pass the written assignments, you will need to meet all of the following Module Learning Outcomes:

  1. Critically analyse of the use of learning theories within the context of a practice learning environment to promote evidence-based practice.
  2. Consider theoretical evidence and reflect on its application in own practice whilst utilising learning, teaching and assessment strategies.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to effectively use a model of reflection and critically analyse learning styles, contributing to feedback for formative and summative assessment.
  4. Analyse the needs of others and assist in their learning and development, whilst identifying and reflecting on own attributes and qualities in supporting learning and assessment in practice.
  5. Enhance communication and leadership skills to develop and promote both interprofessional, and team working, within their environment in order to create an optimum learning experience.

Introduce the assignment topic

• This should include the teaching session you have chosen to reflect on.

• Include a rationale as to the reflective model you have used to reflect on teaching and learning styles included within the session you are reflecting on. You need to indicate why you have chosen this model and why it lends itself well to reflecting on teaching. For example, if you have chosen ‘Rolfes’ model of reflection state why, using underpinning literature to support your statement.

• NOTE: Do not waste words on discussing the teaching session itself at length.

• Following this, briefly explain what you will be discussing in the main body of the work, which should follow the sections of your chosen reflective model.

Main Body of Work.

(Please do not use the sub- title ‘main body’ as a heading for the main

section of your work). This is merely to give you a guide on what to include in this section.

The structure of this section will be determined by your chosen reflective model. For example: -

What:

Indicate the teaching methods and theories included in the session you reflected on. Critically analyse and debate them. Explain how they are advantageous to clinical practice and in what context. Consider if you might have included other teaching theories, for example when might you consider a humanist approach? How might this affect the learner?

So what:

How might learning be affected in the workplace? Does it differ depending on the learning environment and if so, how does it differ. Use supporting literature to underpin your discussion. Why might your chosen teaching strategies be useful with particular learning styles? Do you need to consider how students learn and if so, how might you accommodate this for optimum learning.

What learning styles did the students in your session demonstrate and were they conducive to your taught session? If so, why? If not, why not?

What Now:

What did you learn about yourself as a teacher from reflecting on this session?

Knowing what you know about learning styles and the main teaching theories what would you consider planning future teaching sessions?

 

How does communication and leadership affect teaching sessions? How can you promote optimum learning for nurses?

Presentational Considerations

• Start a new paragraph to discuss different concepts

• Demonstrate your skills in searching, citing and critically analysing relevant literature

• Include critical analysis of the literature

• Remember, critiquing doesn’t necessarily mean reviewing and presenting research in a negative way, you can indicate why you believe it is beneficial.

• Use in-text citations and references in your reference list correctly

• Ensure your final assignment drafts are proof-read for spelling and grammar before submitting.

Along with structure and content the above will be considered when your assessment is marked.

Conclusion (Approx 250 words)

• Overview of what has been discussed in the main body and what you have learned as a result of this piece of work.

• Do not say anything new in this section

• Keep it short and concise

References

• For all in-text citations, a reference list should be included at the end in Harvard referencing style

• Use Cite them Right and contact Library Talk for support

• Reference list does not count in your word limit

• References used throughout the work should be from 2015 onwards (unless seminal). This keeps your work contemporary.
