As part of the formal assessment for the programme you are required to submit a

Learning Outcomes:

After completing the module, you should be able to:

1. Describe the historical and philosophical ideas and debates around the concepts of health.
2. Understand how health and wellbeing are influenced by social, political, economic and environmental factors.
3. Examine key challenges facing planetary health and how social determinants of health and health inequities impact on global health programs and health outcomes.
4. Demonstrate understanding of this role of health in people's well-being locally, nationally and globally.
5. Graduate Attribute: Responsible Global Citizenship - Understand global issues and their place in globalised economy, ethical decision-making and accountability. Adepo self-awareness, openness and sensitivity to diversity in culture

Guidance

Your assignment should include: a title page containing your student number, the module name, the submission deadline and the exact word count of your submitted document; the appendices if relevant; and a reference list in (see referencing section for more information). You should address all the elements of the assignment task listed below. Please note that tutors will use the assessment criteria set out below in assessing your work.

You must not include your name in your submission because Arden University operates anonymous marking, which means that markers should not be aware of the identity of the student. However, please do not forget to include your STU number.

Maximum word count: 1500 words

The word count includes everything in the main body of the assessment (including in text citations and references). The word count excludes numerical data in tables, figures, diagrams, footnotes, reference list and appendices. All other printed words ARE included in the word count.
Students who exceed the wordcount up to a 10% margin will not be penalised. Students should note that no marks will be assigned to work exceeding the specified limit once the maximum assessment size limit has been reached.

Task summary:

Consider a current planetary health issue and discuss the introduction of sustainable practices related to social, political, environmental and economic factors of planetary health, demonstrating the learning outcomes for the module.

In your answer, consider the key challenges that have arisen as a result of this health issue and the impact this has had on peoples’ and the planets well-being and effectivity locally, nationally and globally.

Assignment instructions:

For this task, you must produce

1. A public facing piece of writing (2,500) OR a recorded presentation (10 mins) aimed at the public to raise awareness of a planetary health concern
2. Choose ONE format from the list below:

• Magazine article
• Blog
• Leaflet
• Opinion Piece

3. Examples of contemporary issues you could choose includes climate change, pandemics, Non-Communicable Diseases, environmental degradation, urbanisation etc… 

You will need to:

• Explain the concept of health, sustainable practices and how this is impacted by social, political, environmental and economic factors, outlining how each of these factors can negatively and positively impact disease
• Describe your understanding of the key differences between Planetary Health, Global Health and One Health. Outlining the similarities and differences between these giving examples to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.(LO 1, LO2)
• Describe your planetary health (environmental) concern in detail and explain its impact on people’s health and well-being locally, internationally and globally – considering factors such as social, political, economic and environmental influences. Within your explanation you should discuss key challenges (at least 2) facing your planetary health concern and identify the specific SDG goals or targets that these relate to. (LO 2, LO 3)
• Explain how this issue impacts the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Analyse the specific goals or targets within the SDGs framework that are directly or indirectly affected by the issue, emphasising the potential consequences for sustainable development (LO 3, LO 4)
• Summarise the main points regarding your planetary health concern and write a paragraph that leaves a lasting impression on your audience
• Present a compelling call-to-action or thought-provoking idea to inspire your readers to take planetary health issues seriously:

Step 1: Identify your key message or recommendation.
Step 2: Explain why this message is important for your audience.
Step 3: Suggest one simple action your audience can take.
