Word Count 1000 words
Assessment Type Component 1: Coursework
Assessment Title Report (3parts)
Level: Level 4
Semester: Semester 2
Submission Dates:  Part 1 (20%) = 30/01/25 (Wk1) - Problem Specification.

Part 3 (40%) = 10/04/25 (Wk11) - Robot testing results.

Learning outcomes of Component 1: Coursework

  • Identify the engineering design pipeline and the process involved and its issues locally and globally.
  • Analyse the design brief and problem in order to develop ideas and solutions through background research, brain storming and initial design concepts.
  • Implement an initial proof of concept via a prototype, development work, testing, and redesign iterations.

NOTES:

The usual University penalties apply for late submission.

This is an individual assessment. Submission of an assessment indicates that you, as a student, have completed the assessment yourself and the work of others has been fully acknowledged and referenced.

By submitting this assessed work, you are declaring that you are fit to submit, and you will therefore not normally be eligible to submit a request for mitigation for this work.

If your result for this assessment is recorded as Non-Submission or your mark for this assessment and for the whole module is below 40%, you will have an opportunity to take reassessment with a submission date in the week commencing the 7th of July, 2025 and your mark will be capped at 40% (see Reassessment information below).

If you are granted deferral through the mitigation process, you may complete the reassessment with a full range of marks available.

For further information, please refer to your Course Handbook or University Assessment Regulations, and any specific assessment / reassessment details on this course’s area of MyBeckett.

Re- Assessment

The reassessment / deferral assessment takes the same form as the original assessment.

You should ignore the submission dates contained within the original assignment and instead work towards the coursework reassessment deadline.

Please look at any feedback

given, consult your tutor and discuss how you can improve on your work.

MARKING SCHEME / CRITERIA)

This module is a simulation of a real development project, in that it follows the process from initial design, through development of the proof of concept prototype, to final testing and measurement of performance on a series of challenges.

This project is based on the ELEGOO UNO R3 Smart Robot

1and requires the following

sequence of activities:

  • Identify each part or component and its correct orientation in the robot system, and understand how it works and interconnects with the other parts.
  • Assemble, check and test each section. Join all sections together to complete the whole.
  • Connect to the Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and test each section of code provided.
  • Independently develop additional structured code to implement necessary functionality to satisfy each of the weekly challenges.
  • Fully test, and document, the finished system in order to show its proper operation.

This first part of the assessment is a lab report (using the template provided on MyBeckett) on the construction, testing and operation that you have been working on in the laboratory. Use the formal template provided, together with professional quality drawings, images and text to construct the report.

Any background information used must be supported by primary and secondary research and must be cited / referenced using the Harvard referencing style.

Notes:

  1. The report should be 1000 words long (+/- 100 words). Content that exceeds the limit will NOT be marked.
  2. All work should be your own.
  3. All diagrams, figures and tables must be labelled (e.g. Figure 1, Table 1, etc.). If not self-produced, these must have an appropriate citation to the source.
  4. No hand-drawn diagrams or tables.
  5. Accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar are very important. Errors in these areas make it more difficult to convey your ideas. You will lose marks for mistakes.
  6. The use of direct quotes is discouraged; it is always better to write in your own words, citing the source in the normal way.
  7. Cutting and pasting of text from any other source (with or without citation) will generally lead to low marks, and may constitute an academic offence.
  8. Repeating back only what has been provided will lead to lower marks. A significant amount of reading / research is expected at this level.
