ENG5029 Assignment Overview 

You must write a 2000-word written assignment to critically evaluate the effectiveness of current aviation security policies. Your analysis should consider various aspects of aviation security, including regulatory frameworks, implementation practices, and the impact of these policies on different stakeholders (e.g. airlines, airports, and passengers). 

You must choose one of the following topics to focus on for your evaluation: 

Passenger and Baggage Screening: Analyse the policies related to passenger and baggage screening, including the use of advanced imaging technology (AIT) and Explosive Trace Detection (ETD). Assess the balance between security effectiveness and passenger convenience. 

Regulatory Compliance: Examine how well aviation security policies (e.g. UK, EU) align with international standards, such as ICAO Annexe 17. Evaluate the consistency of policy implementation across different countries and airports.

Incident Prevention and Response: Analyse the success of policies in preventing security incidents (e.g., terrorist attacks) and their effectiveness in responding to such incidents.

Introduction(200 - 300 words) 

• Provide an overview of the importance of aviation security.
• State the purpose of the report and outline its structure. 

Literature Review(500 - 600 words) 

• Summarise key academic and industry literature on aviation security policies.
• Identify the main themes and findings from the literature

Evaluation of Current Policies(800 - 1000 words) 

• Critically evaluate the effectiveness of current aviation security policies.
• Analyse the strengths and weaknesses of these policies using a SWOT analysis.
• Consider the impact on various stakeholders, including airlines, airports, and passengers. 

Case Study (300 - 400 words) 

• Present one case study that illustrates the effectiveness or shortcomings of aviation security policies.
• Note: The Case study must be discussed and agreed upon with the module academic staff. 

Conclusion and Recommendations(200 - 300 words) 

• Summarise the key findings of your evaluation.
• Provide recommendations for improving aviation security policies. 

References(not in word count) 

• Include a Harvard-style reference list following Cite Them Right guidelines.
• You are expected to use a range of academic sources, including peer-reviewed journal articles, official reports, and relevant case studies. You must include at least 10 academic sources
