1 Client brief

1.1 Study site

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is interested in evaluating the performance of the intersection at Logan Road and Padstow Road in the suburb of Eight Mile Plains(see  Figure 1). This intersection experiences significant congestion during peak periods, leading tosubstantial delays for commuters. Complaints regarding excessive delays on both Logan Road andPadstow Road. have raised concerns about driver frustration, which may contribute to road rageincidents   and   an   increased   risk  of   crashes.  Additionally,   prolonged   trafÏc   congestion  results  inconsiderable socio-economic losses and environmental impacts.

1.2 Congestion Analysis

To  assess  congestion  levels,  you  are  commissioned  to  analyse  the  data  from  Bluetooth  MACScanners (BMS) installed at the site. Figure 2 shows the locations of the BMS devices:

  • BMS-1 and BMS-2 are positioned on Logan Road.
  • BMS-3 and BMS-4 are positioned on Padstow Road.

EGB272: TrafÏc and Transport Engineering Assignment

The following site-specific details apply:

  • The distance between BMS-1 and BMS-2 is 1,100 meters.
  • The distance between BMS-3 and BMS-4 is 900 meters.
  • The speed limit for all roads under consideration is 60 km/h.

Representative morning  peak-hour travel time data  from the BMS  scanners is provided in Table 1,and refer to the metadata in Table 2 additional data is available in the Excel files tt_stat_logan.xlsxand tt_stat_padstow.xlsx, which contain travel time statistics for upstream and downstream links.Data collection took place over a one-week period, from Monday, April 1, 2019, to Friday, April 5,2019.

2 Analysis

With the above information, you should estimate the congestion levels for the study site. For this, you should analyse the BMS travel time data and report your observation for the study network.

Thisincludesa) Space mean speed trends over the week for all the links. You can present your findings inthe table as below:

3 Reporting

You are expected to make two submissions:

3.1 Individual Submission

Each student must independently submit the Executive Summary of the report, summarizing the key aspects of their work in their own words.

Note: This is not a group submission. The executive summary can be around 200 words.

3.2 Group Submission

You should submit a single, adequately formatted engineering report for the whole team, including appended analyses.

There is no specified page limit; however, you are expected to write economically and clearly. The report can be finalised within 1000-1200 words. The word limit is just a guideline.

Your report should include the following sections for Individual and group submissiona) Introduction: You should present your understanding of the client brief and the tasks youneed to complete.

You should also include assumptions made in the analysis.(Weight 2%)b)

Methodology: Present the methodology you have adopted to quantify the congestion.(Weight 3%)c) Analysis: Present your findings on the site's congestion including the space mean speedtrends over the week for all the links, and discussion on the travel time reliability. You can present your findings in the table as below:
