CVE30003 Transport Engineering Assignment 2 Brief - Swinburne

Published: 28 May, 2025
Category Assignment Subject Engineering
University Swinburne University of Technology Module Title CVE30003 Transport Engineering

CVE30003 RELATED LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Analyse and assess the performance of routes and intersections though an understanding of traffic flow theories and the use of hand calculations and relevant software. (K1, K2, K3, S1) (EAC PO2)
  2. Apply the principles and objectives of geometric design in the design of intersection using current guidelines and generate a complete set of high standard plans and high quality reports as part of a team. (K2, K3, S1, S2, S3, A7) (EAC PO1)

CVE30003 INTRODUCTION

You are tasked to analyse and assess the performance of the Entrance 1 and Entrance 2 based on the following treatment options:

  1. unsignalised intersection (Entrance 1 and Entrance 2)
  2. roundabout (Entrance 1 only)
  3. signalised intersection (existing) from Assignment 1 (except signalised intersection) using SIDRA.

Note:

  • Groups 1-4 will only need to do the analyses for AM peak hour.
  • Groups 5-7 will only need to do the analyses for PM peak hour.

CVE30003 GUIDELINES (YOUR TASKS)

1.Compile your proposed unsignalised intersection (Entrance 1 and 2) and roundabout (Entrance 1) layouts, together with all its associated parameters such as volume, roundabout's diameter, entry angle, movements, etc., from Assignment 1. All the information should be summarised properly without having the need to refer to Assignment 1. Please also provide a copy of the unsignalised intersection and roundabout analyses from Assignment 1. You may also list down your assumptions, if any. [ULO3]

2. Using SIDRA, analyse the performance of the unsignalised intersection at Entrance 1 and Entrance 2. [ULO2]

3. Using SIDRA, analyse the performance of the roundabout at Entrance 1 only. [ULO2]

4. Assess the existing signalised intersection using SIDRA. You will need to obtain additional information such as cycle time, yellow, all red, etc from the actual site during the peak hours as indicated in Assignment 1. You may obtain the information for 3 cycles to get an average.

5. Change the phasing system for the existing traffic and analyse the signalised intersection again.

6. Extract the following from SIDRA for all three intersection types (either AM or PM analyses) for submission:
a.Site layout;
b.Volumes (Print Screen from Site Input);
c.Input Report;

  1. Intersection - Approach & Exit Data;
  2. Lane Geometry - Lane Configuration;
  3. Lane Geometry - Lane Configuration - Short Lanes and Two-Segment Lanes (if any);
  4. Lane Geometry - Lane Data (Unsignalised and signalised only);
  5. Roundabouts -Geometry (Roundabout only);
  6. Volumes - Vehicle Volumes;
  7. Volumes - Volume Factors;
  8. Gap Acceptance - Gap Acceptance Data (Unsignalised and roundabout only);
  9. Vehicle Movement Data - Path Data; and
  10. Vehicle Movement Data -Calibration.

d.Detailed output;

  1. Movement Capacity and Performance Parameters;
  2. Movement Speed and Geometric Delay;
  3. Parameter Settings Summary

e.Lane summary;

f.LOS summary;
g.Phasing Summary (for signalised intersection only); and
h.Movement Timing (for signalised intersection only). [ULO3]

7.Discuss the results in terms of:

  1. comparison of the manual analysis (from Assignment 1) and SIDRA analysis (from Task 2) of the unsignalised intersection;
  2. comparison of the manual analysis (from Assignment 1) and SIDRA analysis (from Task 3) of the roundabout; and
  3. the SIDRA analysis of the signalised intersection. [ULO3]

8.Each individual member shall make a personal reflection on your own learning of Assignments 1 and 2. You are to reflect on all the following questions. Your reflection is limited to 1-2 pages and is to be submitted separately. There is no specific format for the reflection.

  1. What was the aspect of learning that you enjoyed the most? Your least favourite part?
  2. What were some of my most powerful learning moments and what made them so?
  3. What were the challenges/satisfaction you faced when you were conducting the traffic count?
