CSE4046-N ECA Assessment

100% ECA: 3,000 word individual article (academic or practitioner- based) that examines a current issue in business and society and identifies appropriate solutions to make a positive difference.

Essays should be in a word document and compatible with university software- To be submitted via 

Blackboard using Turnitin only

Pass mark is 50%. Students will be informed if they do not meet the minimum pass criteria and if they need to resubmit the work after the university relevant board meets.

Assessment Criteria

• Ability to select and apply selected theories, models and concepts to analyse the issue (s).
• Draw appropriate conclusions and identify practice-orientated recommendations.
• Evidence of wider reading beyond the discipline of management.

DISCUSSION

Discussion of the identified current issue (s) and its impact on society - 30%

What is the current issue identified? Discuss it in the context of its importance for business and society. Explore the business environment and the intervening factors that influence business and its implication for society as underpinned by literature. Ensure you signpost in the introduction the focus of your paper and what the sections will cover. Avoid description but include references to your arguments. Think in a 4 stage process (What does it say, what does this mean, Why is it important, What is the impact?)

THEORIES

Ability to select and apply selected theories, models and concepts to analyse the issue (s) – 30%

Here, you’re expected to review relevant literature on the issue selected and the related theories and concepts that will help in exploring the issue in a critical way. The application of theories in other cases (practice) can be explored to show how the same concepts and theories will be relevant for addressing the selected issue.
Use the literature to strengthen your argument and analysis. Link the theory specifically to the issue selected. Ensure this section is based on evidence. As above – avoid description, I’m interested in what you think it all means in practice.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Draw appropriate conclusions and identify practice-orientated recommendations – 20%

Take a critical approach to the analysis, leading to specific insights
You will be assessed on your ability to suggest recommendations based on evidence (literature). Refer back to the theory if you have found a scholar who supports your thinking and cite the author in this section

WIDER READING

Evidence of wider reading beyond the discipline of management – 10%

Look for appropriate literature/research (theory, empirical studies and concepts) to help explore, explain, frame and comment on the issue selected. As a minimum, you need to have reviewed the resources located in the reading list. You need to provide evidence of your knowledge. It is fine to include policy or government reports if appropriate. Avoid being overly descriptive.

REFERENCING & PRESENTATION

Referencing and Presentation – 10%

Consider the structure and flow of your assessment; check your sources, are they academic, are they relevant, are they accurate etc. Include a front cover, title and contents page, use pt size 12, 1.5 line space, and include pictures, tables, charts and visuals if appropriate. Use headings and sub headings, present as a report or an academic paper. Ensure accuracy of references in text and in the reference list. Use Harvard referencing style. Do not use non- academic sources including Mindtools, Business Balls, Tutor2You, Wordpress, Wiki’s, commercial features in magazines etc. Do not lose marks because of presentation issues - If in doubt – check!!
