Introduction from the Module Leader

The purpose of this module is to enhance the students’ appreciation of the planned events sector and to develop their understanding of the issues affecting international events management now and in the future. It will expose students to international multi- and inter-disciplinary research applied to events management, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. By engaging students in an advanced level analysis of contemporary issues and debates, the module will establish the ethos of the course and the approach to postgraduate study. An emphasis will be placed on the potential contribution of research to understanding management problems and the sustainable development of the international events sector.

Module Aims 

The aims of this module are to:

enhance the students’ appreciation of the factors that influence the development of the global events sector, including issues of sustainable and responsible events management practice;
promote the contribution of academic research to their understanding of key issues affecting the management of events;
demonstrate the importance of engaging critically with events management practice and academic literature for effective postgraduate study.

Module Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the key environmental, socio-cultural, political and economic factors that are shaping the events sector internationally.
  2. Explain the role of ‘knowledge’ in the effective management of events.
  3. Critically assess a range of contemporary issues and responsibility in events management using competing perspectives.
  4. Discuss the implications of relevant research for the strategic or operational management of event organisations.
