4. Be able to utilise this information to inform own writing

Guidance

Your assignment should include: a title page containing your student number, the module name, the submission deadline and the exact word count of your submitted document; the appendices if relevant; and a reference list in AU Harvard system(s). You should address all the elements of the assignment task listed below. Please note that tutors will use the assessment criteria set out below in assessing your work.

You must not include your name in your submission because Arden University operates anonymous marking, which means that markers should not be aware of the identity of the student. However, please do not forget to include your STU number.

Maximum word count: 3000 words

Please refer to the full word count policy which can be found in the Student Policies section here: Arden University | Regulatory Framework

Please note the following:

Students are required to indicate the exact word count on the title page of the assessment.
The word count includes everything in the main body of the assessment (including in text citations and references). The word count excludes numerical data in tables, figures, diagrams, footnotes, reference list and appendices. ALL other printed words ARE included in the word count.
Please note that exceeding the word count by over 10% will result in a 10-percentage point deduction.

Assignment Task

As part of the formal assessment for Introducing Research Skills, you are required to submit a Portfolio (with a series of completed tasks) demonstrating that you have met the learning outcomes for this module.

Formative Draft Portfolio Submission
In Week 6, you will have the opportunity to submit a draft of task 1 and 2 of your portfolio. This portfolio submission will evidence how you have met the module learning outcomes.
We will give you feedback on your draft in class in Week 7. Your portfolio should include the following:
You can submit your draft to the Turnitin link on the module iLearn. ✓ Portfolio Task 1 - Summarise the academic background to your chosen research topic (500 words) (LO1; LO3; LO4)
Feedback: You will receive feedback from your lecturer on your draft in class, and you will use this feedback to improve your final portfolio submission. ✓ Portfolio Task 2 - Formulate a research question (300 words) (LO2)
  ✓ Portfolio Task 3 - Describe your research methodology (400 words) (LO1; LO2; LO3; LO4)
✓ Portfolio Task 4 - Reference list (no word count) (LO1)
✓ Portfolio Task 5 - Using feedback to improve your work (200 words) (LO4)

Assignment Details

For this assignment, imagine you are a researcher, specialising in one of the research topics below:

  • Big Data and Information Technology
  • Lifestyle and physical and/or mental wellbeing
  • Business leadership and corporate social responsibility
  • Social Psychology

The criminal justice system

You have the chance to apply for a grant to continue your research. However, to apply for
the grant, you have to put together a mini research proposal. The mini- proposal will explain what your research question is, and how you will go about answering your question.
To complete your mini research proposal, you will complete these five short tasks.

Portfolio tasks

Portfolio Task 1 - Summarise the academic background to your chosen research topic (500 words) (LO1: L03: L04)

Search the university library database for at least three relevant book chapters (perhaps from undergraduate textbooks) about your subject. From your reading, what have you found out about your research topic? Summarise these key ideas in your own words and provide in-text citations and a reference list at the end of your mini proposal.

Portfolio Task 2 - Formulate a research question (300 words) (LO2)

  • State your final research question.
  • Explain what you are aiming to find out through your research project.
  • Explain why your research would be of interest and importance to the people offering the grant.

Portfolio Task 3 - Describe your research methodology (400 words) (L01:L02: LO3;LO4)

Explain to the people giving the grant how you would go about your research. You should consider the following points:

Include a statement explaining why this research should receive a grant - who will it help, and why?
Would your research project collect primary data or analyse secondary data? Which research approach (qualitative or quantitative) would best help you to answer your research question? Give reasons for your choice.

  • What research method would you use? Explain why you would use this method.
  • Are there any ethical issues you would need to consider?

Portfolio Task 4 - Reference list (no word count) (LO1)

Include a reference list of all sources referred to in your portfolio. Refer to the Arden University Referencing and Avoiding Plagiarism webpage
(https://library.arden.ac.uk/referencing-and-avoiding-plagiarism) to help you format your
references correctly.

Portfolio Task 5 - Using the feedback from your formative draft to improve your work (200 words) (L04)

Write 200 words on how you have used the feedback on your formative draft (see below) to improve your final portfolio. You could discuss your choice of sources, the suitability of your research question, your writing style, the accuracy of your referencing, or anything else that is suggested by your lecturer. Please note you do not need to include your formative draft.

Formative Draft

In Week 6, you will have the opportunity to submit a draft of task 1 and 2 of your portfolio. We will give you feedback on your draft in class in Week 7.
Please use this feedback to help you improve your portfolio and discuss the improvements you have made in Task 5 (see above).

If you do not submit the formative draft, it could affect your grade, as you will be unable to complete Task 5, so please ensure that you submit it by the given deadline.

Referencing Guidance

You MUST underpin your analysis and evaluation of the key issues with appropriate and wide ranging academic research and ensure this is referenced using the AU Harvard system(s).
Follow this link to find the referencing guides for your subject: Arden Library

Submission Guidance

Assignments submitted late will not be accepted and will be marked as a 0% fail.
Your assessment can be submitted as a single Word (MS Word) or PDF file, or, as multiple files.
If you chose to submit multiple files, you must name each document as the question/part you are answering along with your student number ie Q1 Section A STUXXXX. If you wish to overwrite your submission or one of your submissions, you must ensure that your new submission is named exactly the same as the previous in order for the system to overwrite it.

You must ensure that the submitted assignment is all your own work and that all sources used are correctly attributed. Penalties apply to assignments which show evidence of academic unfair practice. (See the Student Handbook which is available on the A-Z key information on iLearn.)
