University University of Birmingham (UoB) Module Title Numerical Analysis Determine allowable capacity of pile if FS =3.5

Assignment

1. List the pile which classified according to the material used for construction, then discuss indetail the advantage and disadvantage of these type of pile.

2. What will happen if you install driven pile in clay and sandy soil?

3. Describe collapsible soil and its nature under load

4. Explain the difference between shallow foundation and deep foundation?

5. Define Negative skin Friction. How it developed?

6. A concrete pile is 16m long and 400mm X 400mm cross section The pile is fully embedded in sand forwhich unit weight of soil γ= 18kN/m3 and ϕ=30o Calculate ultimate point load, Qp by

I. Meyerhof’s method

II. Vesic method if Es=20.5MN/m2 μs=0.3 for sand

III. Janbu method if η’ =900 , for this sand

A concrete pile is 16m long and 400mm X 400mm cross section The pile is fully embedded in sand forwhich unit weight of soil γ= 18kN/m3 and ϕ=30o a) Determine the frictional resistance Qs using K=1.3 and δ =0.8ϕ b) Using the result Qp obtain from Ex 1, estimate the allowable load carrying capacity of the pile.Take Fs=4

8. A pile (closed end) that has been driven in to a layered sand is shown in figure 1 calculate:

a) The ultimate point load by Meyerhof’s procedure

b) The ultimate frictional resistance, Qs, use K = 1.4, and δ’= 0.7ϕ

c) The allowable load of the pile, use FS = 4

Numerical Analysis

9. A concrete pile is driven into the strata shown in Fig 2. Based on data given in Fig 2,determine ultimate point load, Qp by

a. Meyerhof’s method

b. Vesic’s method if Es =20MN/m2

c. Janbu method if η =75

d. Determine frictional resistance using the same data as shown in Fig 2 assuming that the pile is high displacement driven pile and δ =0.7ϕ

e. Determine allowable capacity of pile if FS =3.5

Numerical Analysis

10. A driven pile in clay shown in the following Fig, the pile has an outside diameter of 400mm and wallthickness of 6.35mm.

a) Calculate the net point bearing capacity of the pile

b) Calculate skin friction by methods for clay layer. The top 10m of the clay is normally consolidated. The bottom clay layer has an OCR =2

c) Estimate the net allowable pile capacity if FS=4
