By sitting this assessment, I am confirming:
Referencing: Students are expected to use Harvard Referencing throughout their assignments where required. Please follow the Harvard Referencing Handbook for all your assignments at the ULBS.
Submission Method: Turnitin - Your work will be put through Turnitin. All submissions will be electronically checked for plagiarism and the use of AI software.
You have the option to upload your work ahead of the deadline, more than once. ULBS will be reviewing your last submission only. You can only upload one file. For example if your work contains a word document and power point slides/Excel spreadsheet you will need to copy your slides/spreadsheet into the word document.
Note: Keep in mind that self-plagiarism (when you reuse your own specific wording and ideas from work that you have previously submitted without referencing yourself) is also a form of plagiarism and is not allowed.
This assignment allows you to show your understanding of the concepts discussed within this module, to redesign a process based on your experience of interacting with a government service in the UK for example applying for a visa, driver's licence, council tax exemption. NHS referral, GP appointments, NHS repeat prescriptions, NI number application, etc. (this is NOT an exhaustive list but a guide to get you thinking about examples of government services). You will do this by developing a process change to improve the government services. For this assignment you are expected to identify a process improvement opportunity based on an experience with any government service that you have interacted with recently, you should map the process including your assumptions of what may be happening ‘behind the scenes’; discuss implementation plan for your chosen improvement following an evaluation of two possible improvement options. Your report must include the following 4 tasks:
Introduce and explain the context of the government service that will form the basis of your report. You should then critically evaluate three (3) concepts used within Lean Management and methodologies considering the following key themes, continuous improvement, process improvement methodologies, process mapping and how they are linked to sustainability. When showing your understanding of the concepts, you should apply these to your chosen government service.
Analyse a process (from a customer perspective) for the government department. You should scope the business process problem and subsequently analyse and model the current process. You should map the current process, including relevant analysis and include a discussion around the ‘AS-IS’, this should identify the main problem with the current process.
Discuss and model two options for process redesign for the chosen business process. The relevant analysis/modelling diagrams should draw from Task 2 and show a clear improvement to the current process as you create two possible ‘TO-BE’ states for the organisation. You should include the benefits and challenges these process changes will bring to the organisation and provide the reader with an understanding of the organisation’s viable options and a justified recommendation.
Recommend implementation and management of the business process from Task 3 using relevant module material. Evaluate the suitability of Agile Project Methodology for the implementation of your recommended option. You are now required to write a recommendation advocating the use of Agile as the preferred methodology for your process improvement. Your discussion should demonstrate an understanding of Agile principles and effectively justify its suitability for managing the project life cycle.
Please refer to the marking criteria (below) for a breakdown of how the tasks will be marked.
