Assessment Task: 

Consider Aqua Water & Utilities (AWU)as the UK's largest provider of water and wastewater services, is at the forefront of addressing challenges related to water management, environmental sustainability, and service affordability. The company faces growing pressure due to climate change, increasing regulatory scrutiny, and the financial demands of maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure. 

You have recently joined AWU as a Business Analyst, tasked with evaluating the business landscape and recommending innovative strategies to ensure long-term operational sustainability. Your recommendations should balance affordability for customers, compliance with environmental targets, and the company's need for infrastructure investment. 

Scenario: 

Your line manager has referred to you a range of industry data, including trends in water usage, customer expectations, and environmental performance metrics. Your analysis should address the following key challenges: 

• Ageing infrastructure is leading to frequent breakdowns and high operational costs.
• Pressures to reduce water waste and meet stringent environmental standards.
• Balancing pricing strategies in a regulated market with increasing customer demand for value and transparency. 

Using the recent industry data and relevant theoretical and economic models, you are required to complete the following tasks. 

Task 1: Application of Economic Models and Concepts (1500 words) 

• Identify and explain relevant economic models and theories (e.g., Externalities, Price Elasticity of Demand, or Investment Appraisal) that can help address AWU's challenges.
• Apply these models to analyse the impact of rising operational costs, infrastructure maintenance, and customer expectations on AWS's profitability and pricing.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of government policies and interventions, such as environmental subsidies, water efficiency campaigns, or infrastructure grants, in supporting AWS's operations.
• Provide evidence-based insights into how AWS can use these models to optimise resource allocation and improve sustainability while maintaining affordability for customers. 

Task 2: Examination of the Regulatory Framework and Legal Limitations (1500 words) 

• Provide an overview of the legal and regulatory environment in which AWS operates, with particular reference to the role of Ofwat, environmental regulations, and pricing caps.
• Analyse how these regulations influence AWS's operational decisions, including their ability to invest in infrastructure, improve water conservation, and address leakage issues.
• Discuss how compliance with environmental and pricing regulations may create both challenges and opportunities for AWS.
• Recommend strategic approaches that AWS can adopt to ensure regulatory compliance, address customer needs, and strengthen its position in a competitive and globalised environment.
