BMA5000 Assessment Brief 1

Introduction and Rationale

This assessment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your problem-solving, creativity skills, and your understanding of creativity in the wider sense. Presentations will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. This is in response to an increased need to develop skills in communicating in a virtual environment.

From Week 4 onwards (W/C 07/07), students should begin delivering presentations to align with the August 5th deadline.

Assessment Brief

In groups of approximately 3 to 5, you are required to give a presentation of between 8 and 12 minutes. Your presentation must cover the following:

  • What (pathway-specific, if applicable) problem has your group worked on? Mention why it’s an important problem.
  • What problem-solving strategy are you using.
  • Your analysis of the problem shows that you can use at least one problem definition technique and at least one root cause analysis technique.
  • Your ideation (showing you can use at least one idea generation technique), leading up to your identification of a tentative solution.

Students are required to create their presentations using PowerPoint and must include the PowerPoint file in their submission. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade for this assignment

Assessment Guidance

This guidance is numbered to correspond with the list of requirements above.

  • Briefly explain your problem and ‘set the scene’ (provide contextual background information). Ask yourself what information the audience needs to know to understand the rest of the presentation and how to most efficiently demonstrate why the problem is important.
  • This step essentially provides the structure for the rest of your presentation, as the strategy is the framework within which you’ll consider your problem. Whilst you should try to be critical in explaining why you’ve chosen a given strategy and ideally, then, compare and contrast several strategies, you may not have time to do this in detail. As a minimum, explain why your chosen strategy is appropriate in the given circumstances.
  • Your analysis of the problem involves clearly defining what the problem is, or which aspect you will be focusing on, and trying to identify the root cause/s of the problem. Remember to be critical here in explaining why you’ve used a particular technique (ideally when considered against others), but more importantly, make sure you are using the tools for their intended purpose and accurately. That is, make sure you’re using problem definition tools for problem definition and root cause analysis tools for identifying the root cause/s, etc.
  • Explain which idea generation tool/s you have used and why. Ideally, include a critical analysis of why you've chosen these techniques. You could show the ideas (solutions) you came up with and then explain which is your preferred option and why. Make it clear how this solution addresses the problem.

Note: You will receive a group mark. However, the module leader and seminar leaders reserve the right to amend an individual’s mark where there is sufficient evidence that they have not participated fully in the assessment, including failing them entirely where there is evidence of negligible engagement.
