Title: A Journey Through My Rat’s Body

This Practical Assignment is a Poster Design which contributes 30% to your total grade for the subject. It is to be completed individually.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this assignment, students should be able to:

• apply and demonstrate understanding of anatomy and physiology by describing the structure and function of two body systems
• compare one key organ from the rat to its equivalent in another vertebrate (ruminant, bird or fish)

Instructions

1. Select two systems you explored during your rat dissection. You should include the following:

• One from: Digestive or urinary system, AND
• One from: Circulatory, respiratory, nervous, or reproductive system

2. Create your journey by imagining you are a tiny explorer travelling through your dissected rat’s body, following the pathway of that system.

• You might follow a drop of blood, a piece of food, a nerve impulse, or even a sperm cell to name a few examples.

3. As you travel, describe the journey in a creative but scientifically accurate way.

4. Mention at least 3 major structures in each system and explain briefly what happens at each stop (structure + function).

5. Along your journey, pause to compare one key organ or structure from your rat to that of either a ruminant, bird, or fish.

• Explain briefly how that organ may differ in structure, how these differences relate to diet, environment or lifestyle, and add an adaptation or physiological advantage of the other animal owing to this difference.

6. At the end of the poster, reflect (using not more than 100 words) on this practical dissection with the help of any ONE of the following questions:

• What are some challenges you have faced during the dissection, and how have you overcome it?
• What anatomical structures were most challenging to identify or isolate? Why?
• Did the dissection help clarify how certain body systems are connected or function together? Elaborate.
• What unexpected findings or variations did you notice during the dissection?o How might anatomical variations impact clinical procedures or surgeries?
• How did hands-on dissection change your understanding compared to textbook learning or models?
• Were there any safety or ethical concerns during the dissection? How were they addressed?

7. You are permitted to submit a maximum of two-page A4 format which includes o Labelled diagrams (hand-drawn or referenced) o Pictures from rat dissection
