ACC7032 Module Summary

Welcome to the Moodle page for ACC7032 Managerial Finance to support your learning. On this page you will find lecture notes, assessments and other study material. In addition you will also find and receive important announcements. This is a core introductory module to Finance. 

The module aims at developing understanding of the financial objective of the firm and underlying constraints, financial reporting and analysis, available sources of funding and basic investment appraisal techniques. It aims at developing students skills in financial planning and decision making. The learning content of the module provides a base for further learning consistent with the program philosophy. 

Learning Outcomes:

1. Evaluate the different competing financial objectives of the firm and the agency problem between shareholders and managers in publicly listed companies.
2. Analyse financial data, conduct cost-benefit analysis and financial planning for effective business decisions using spreadsheet software package.
3. Critically evaluate investment projects using appropriate investment appraisal techniques to assess suitability and viability of the projects consistent with the overall strategy and business model(s) of the firm.
4. Critically appraise the major issues of capital management, relative advantages and disadvantages from the various perspectives of the stakeholders of the firm.

Scheme of Work

The document below is the scheme of work for the module and shows week by week the topic areas we plan to cover. It would be helpful if you read the relevant chapter in the textbook prior to each session to ensure you are fully prepared. 

Reading

The recommended text for the module is Accounting Understanding and Practice (4th Edition) by Danny Leiwy and Robert Perks. You may refer to earlier editions of the textbook if you prefer, though please note the content differs slightly. This text provides a solid grounding in accounting and will be closely linked with the materials covered during the sessions. 

You are also advised to read articles included within the financial press to keep up to date with key accounting issues. 

ACC7032 Assessment

As you know the assessment for this module is 100% coursework assignment and you need to achieve a minimum of 50% in order to pass. The assignment will be made available to you at the start of the module and is due in at the end. Please see the assessment brief and the Assessment Submission point for exact dates. You should submit your assignment as one Word document online using the link below by the due date, though are strongly advised to submit well in advance of this time to avoid any potential IT issues! 

Whilst this may seem like a long time to complete your assignment, please note that you won't be able to complete the entire assignment until teaching sessions for the module have been completed. You should however make a start as early as possible!
