Lay Summary of Literature Review (CW1) 

Policy on Word Limits

Penalties are applied for exceeding any word limit set. Your tutor will advise you whether any word limit is a guideline, or whether your ability to write within the word limit is part of the assessment of the piece of work concerned. If the limit set is a maximum or a minimum, then a penalty of 10% of the mark for that piece of work will be applied to those pieces of work that exceed, or are below, the requirement by 10% or more. Please note, the word count is calculated from all words included from the beginning of the text (does not include the front sheet) to the start of the reference list.

This assessment aims to enable you to demonstrate your understanding of the application of evidence informed practice and the ability to communicate this effectively to patients and those important to them and the wider public by meeting the following learning outcome for the module.

7127SOH CW2 Student Guidelines 

Course work 1 asks you to complete a review of two primary research papers and a corresponding NICE guidance document. Drawing on the report that you have written in CW1 produce a summary of your review that would be meaningful and informative for the lay/non-expert public. 

Presentation Using a report style write up the work that you completed in CW1 in such a way that it can be read and understood by an appropriate identified section of the non-expert public, which will depend on the subject matter chosen. Bear in mind this is not a patient information leaflet about a specific condition, it is a summary of your CW1 for the lay public. For example, your topic may lend itself to focus on children of a certain age, people with learning disabilities, specific mental health conditions or people living with a particular condition like diabetes or heart failure or an area of care like wound care.

Your summary should be divided into headings that relate to your work in CW1. They do not have to be in the same order but need to present a logical picture for the reader.

You may choose to include simple diagrams and pictures e.g. clip art (content from these would not be included in the word count), though any specifically taken from internet sources e.g. certain organisations must be referenced appropriately and licensed for general use. Use the first personwhen you are writing to make it more accessible. Use short sentences and write in plain English avoiding jargon. In some sections you may choose to use bullet points.

Give some background to the review and why you wanted to undertake it, the importance of this area and relevance to this lay/non-expert group of people 

Section 2 (150 words)

Explain how you developed the question and undertook the search strategy. Pay careful attention to the terminology that you use here. 

Section 3 (200 words)

Explain the findings of the two papers 

Section 4 (300 words)

Discuss the themes from the two primary research papers and how they relate to the chosen NICE guidance used in CW1 for people for whom this area is important 

Section 5 (150 words) 

Summarise the key messages and recommendations from your critical appraisal for this group of people
