Word Count | 15000 Words |

Assessment Type | Dissertation |
Assessment Title | CW |
Your dissertation is assessed by the submission of 15,000 word response to your chosen research question
Length
The dissertation should be approximately 15,000 words. You will be penalised for either exceeding or falling short of this target by 10% or more. Appendices and textual footnotes, but not bibliographic references, should be included in the overall word count.
Paper size and spacing
Select an A4 format, and a 12 point type faced. Double or one-and-a-half line spacing should be used, except for indented quotations or footnotes where single-line spacing may be used.
Pagination
Pages must be numbered consecutively through the main text including photographs and/or diagrams which are included as whole pages. The pagination of appendices must be continuous but distinct from the main text.
Title Page
The title page must give the following information:
The dissertation must also include an abstract of around 300 words, setting out a synopsis of the work undertaken. The abstract should appear at the start of the dissertation, usually between the title page and the page of contents.
You must include a list of contents, clearly setting out chapter titles and any other content (e.g., appendices) with the corresponding page numbers.
Any abbreviations should be those in normal use and where necessary a key should be provided.
Quotations over 40 words should be indented and separated from the main text by a space above and below. Single spacing should be used for indented quotations. If material is omitted from within the quotation, 3 dots must be used to signify the omission. If the quotation ends in mid-sentence, dots must again be used to show this.
Make sure that tables and graphs, and any other form of diagrammatic representation, are labelled, understandable, support the conclusions you draw from them, and are referred to in the text.
Appendices may be used sparingly to extend or explain a particular aspect of the analysis, which is secondary, but still relevant, to the substance of the dissertation. Appendices are included in the overall word count.
A bibliography of all the significant sources referred to or consulted must be presented.
A copy of your ethics approval certificate/email should be appended to the end of your dissertation submission, or just a simple statement indicating that the submission has received approval from Coventry University’s ethical committee (including the project number and date of approval).
Section order
Traditionally, the sections are bound in this order (where appropriate):
1.Title page
2.Abstract
3.Acknowledgements (optional)
4.Contents page
5.List(s) of tables and/or illustrations
6.Abbreviations
7.Main text
8.Appendices
9.Bibliography
10.Ethics approval
