6012NHS Assignment Task

Coursework 2 – Personal Leadership Portfolio

(This will be 50% of the final module mark.) Meeting learning outcome numbers 1, 3, and 4

Analyse the importance of leadership and management behaviours and skills for healthcare professionals working within multi-disciplinary teams.

Within a simulated environment, demonstrate the leadership and management behaviours and skills required of a registered professional

Critically reflect on leadership and management issues as experienced within the clinical placement setting and within your personal leadership development as a health professions student.

This CW2 asks you to complete a Leadership Portfolio of 1200 words within the Leadership Portfolio Template as shown on Pages 16 to 18.

This leadership portfolio is separated into 4 elements:

  • Simulated Multidisciplinary Team Meeting (MDT) Critical Reflection (500 words)
  • Analyse the importance of delegation (250 words)
  • Analyse the importance of managing conflict within a team (250 words)
  • Three personal Leadership and Management Objectives (200 words).

This assessment seeks insightful, perceptive, and personal understanding through reflection on how you manage leadership and management, in relation to the areas outlined above. The highest marks will be awarded to those students who are able to concisely write about each area whilst being highly self-aware of both their strengths and weaknesses in relation to leadership behaviours and skills, which are explored throughout the module teaching.

You are greatly encouraged to complete the 16 Personalities Test as suggested in Week 1, utilise learning from the NHS Leadership Academy - Leadership Model to make use of identified strengths and weaknesses in Week 2, and become very familiar with your professional standards which you must uphold on qualification. These will form the basis for this portfolio and allow you to become more self- aware and thus create personal development objectives as a result which link to your professional standards. This can then be taken to clinical practice on qualification and utilised as part of your preceptorship programme. To help support your transition to qualified practitioner and get in the habit of collecting evidence for your learning, we would like you to include 3 pieces of evidence to support your learning or reflection. This will be included as Appendices (A, B and C) to the Leadership Portfolio and uploaded as part of the same document to Turnitin.

Whilst personal reflection is needed for this assessment, we do not want you to utilise a reflective tool within the Leadership Portfolio itself as you will not have enough words. We want you to include what you have learned, as a result of reflection, on perhaps the course content, clinical placement, NHS Leadership Academy, etc., to draw conclusions and explore how this may impact situations in your qualification. How can you plan for this? What may you need to change or be aware of?

You may write in the first person for this portfolio, as it is your personal insights and discoveries that we are keen to hear. References should be used to support your critical personal reflection, but we would like quality references rather than quantity. This Leadership Portfolio is subject to a 10% more or less than the word count (1200 words), so please be mindful of this to avoid losing marks by going beyond the 10% allowance.

See on the next page, the template you will use for your Leadership Portfolio and within it, greater detail of what is needed in each section. We would also strongly suggest looking at this with the CW2 Assessment rubric, which can be seen below, but also more clearly on Aula, so you can see what will gain you the most marks.

Submission Instructions:

  • Electronic Submission via the Turnitin submission link on the module Aula page. Please ensure the following when completing your leadership portfolio:
  • Use the template leadership portfolio on Aula to complete the CW2.
  • Include an overall word count on the first page (this should not include your Appendices, or words already included as part of the template document, or the professional standards column links).
  • Double-space your work within the template.
  • Refer to members of the SIM MDT by roles, please, rather than name.

Development of Skills and Attributes

The module and assessment will develop specific Graduate Attributes, listed below:

  • communicate effectively;
  • adapt approach;

It does this by asking students to complete a personality test, conflict handling exercise, and leadership academy self-assessment, to allow them to critique themselves and consider what strategies they may need to develop to handle situations in the future, but also what attributes they can enhance and develop to aid their professional journey.

LiMB Values

British values are threaded throughout the module in line with the value of the rule of law, which is encompassed within legislation of:

  • Inclusion of LD topics, Child Health, Mental Health, and social dimensions of health throughout the module
  • NMC Code - Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

This module assessment encourages students to be self-reflective and self-analytic to enable them to consider how their approaches to teamwork or conflict may impact others. The student is also encouraged to consider strategies for overcoming any difficulties they may encounter during work and to consider how they can build on their strengths. It is hoped this will enhance mutual respect and tolerance of others whilst they uphold the NMC Code.

All About 6012NHS: Leadership and Management for Healthcare Professionals

6012NHS is assessed on whether you can lead a real service issue to a measurable improvement—not just describe theory. A strong submission does four things:

  • Pin down one concrete NHS problem in your area of practice (e.g., delayed discharges on a medical ward; poor escalation for deteriorating patients in outpatients; DNAs in community therapy).
  • Choose an appropriate leadership approach for this problem (not a textbook parade), showing how you adapted style and behaviours in context.
  • Manages the change with basic project discipline (aims, measures, stakeholders, risks, resources), linked to NHS policy and clinical governance.
  • Evaluates impact and reflects honestly on what changed, what didn’t, and what you’ll do differently next time.
