Working in small groups (4-5 members) to research the digestive condition – Lactose Persistence/Malabsorption. You may choose your own group members but must be from yourBiomed Workshop Group. As soon as you have decided your group members, please inform theModule Leader (ML) via email. This must be done by Tuesday 20th February 2024 2pm. If anyonedoes not have a group to work with by this deadline, the ML will assign you to a group.Prior to the Laboratory sessions, you are required to work with your group members to researchinto the symptoms, Laboratory diagnosis, treatment, and patient management.
You are required to attend with your group members to the Laboratory sessions in Week 10 onThursday 21st March and Friday 22nd March 2024. These sessions will enable you to collectand process saliva samples (as per the Laboratory Protocol available on the Aula page inLaboratory Session section), and data analysis. The tutor will also gather the data from thesesessions for records for the entire cohort.
You will use the Laboratory based experimental results of your group and those of your peers (willbe forwarded to you by the ML) to individually prepare a 1000-word Individual Leaflet (as aMicrosoft Word document) that demonstrates the mini-project research outcomes. The Leaflet is tobe written to a high academic standard, but one that the science can easily be understood by layaudiences (i.e., members of the public with limited science background).
The Leaflet should be written as a mini scientific report comprising sections:
You will lose marks if an Appendix is not included, or minimal supportive documentation added. -15%
The Introduction section must present a background to the condition, previous and current research, on symptoms, diagnosis and management, i.e. what causes the disorder and prevalencein the UK, how are patients diagnosed, how are they professionally managed by different teams of healthcare professionals, and patient emotions and responses. The information in this section should be correctly supported with relevant references. You may use images to support the writingwith visual explanations.
The Method section should clearly explain literature search carried out, i.e. search engines, databases, key words used etc, as well as laboratory diagnostic procedures followed, i.e.molecular techniques (PCR) to detect and/or identify the lactose intolerance gene (LCT) in a small cohort of participants. Ethical approval will be sought by the module leader. There is noexpectation that this will fall onto the students. However, students will have to outline ethical considerations in this section and include the participant information sheet in the appendix.
Results of the data collected and analysed for the entire cohort, including statistical analysis are to be presented appropriately. Please do not present raw data, this section must contain processed data only and show statistical processing and acceptable presentation in the form of flow charts, bar charts etc.
The Discussion/Conclusion section should be an overall presentation on what the qualitative and quantitative research has discovered. Ensure to include “why” elements have been included and what their significance is to your project findings. Your overall outcome/conclusion; you may consider if the laboratory results achieved align with published literature, i.e. prevalence, current theories, perceptions and management plans.
The Appendix should represent a Portfolio of evidence showing professional engagement (emails, record of telephone conversation, meeting notes etc), with peers (evidence of engagement with members of your group), Service Users, other healthcare professionals e.g. Nurses, Dieticians. These can be included in the form of a diary or notes of meetings etc and should include the participant information sheet.
