WM9QJ-15 Assignment Brief and Front Sheet PGT

This front sheet for assignments is designed to contain the brief, the submission instructions, and the actual student submission for any WMG assignment. As a result, the sheet is completed by several people over time, and is therefore split up into sections explaining who completes what information and when. Yellow highlighted text indicates examples or further explanation of what is requested, and the highlight and instructions should be removed as you populate your section.

This sheet is only to be used for components of assessment worth more than 3 CATS (e.g. for a 15 credit module, weighted more than 20%; or for a 10 credit module, weighted more than 30%).

To be completed by the student(s) before final submission:
Your actual submission should be written at the end of this cover sheet file, or attached with the cover sheet at the front if drafted in a separate file, program or application.

To be completed (highlighted parts only) by the programme administration after approval and before issuing of the assessment; to be consulted by the student(s) so that you know how and when to submit:

Date set

22 April 2025

Submission date

(excluding extensions)

Monday, 19 May 2025 by 12:00pm (UK Time)

Submission guidance

To be submitted electronically via Tabula

Marks return date

(excluding extensions)

17 June 2025 (20 working days from submission)

Late submission policy

If work is submitted late, penalties will be applied at the rate of 5 marks per University working day after the due date, up to a maximum of 10 working days late. After this period the mark for the work will be reduced to 0 (which is the maximum penalty). “Late” means after the submission deadline time as well as the date work submitted after the given time even on the same day is counted as 1 day late.

For Postgraduate students only, who started their current course before 1 August 2019, the daily penalty is 3 marks rather than 5.

Resit policy

If you fail this module and/or component, the University allows students to remedy failure (within certain limits). Decisions to authorise resits are made by Exam Boards. These will be issued at specific times of the year, depending on your programme of study. More information can be found from your programme office if you are concerned.

If this is already a resit attempt, this means you will not be eligible for an additional attempt. The University allows as standard a maximum of two attempts on any assessment (i.e. only one resit). Students can

only have a third attempt under exceptional circumstances via a Mitigating Circumstances Panel decision.

To be completed by the module leader/tutor before approval and issuing of the assessment; to be consulted by the student(s) so that you understand the assignment brief, its context within the module, and any specific criteria and advice from the tutor.

WM9QJ-15 Assignment Brief

Industry Analysis based on Manager Interviews

As a new Sustainability consultant hired by Sustainable Logistics Consultancy (SLC), a fictional consultancy firm, you must complete ONE sustainability consultancy project from a selection of four given Manager scenarios [see the link to the Manager interview recordings on Moodle].

Based on your chosen Manager scenario, you are required to produce a 2000-word consultancy report, which will be assessed in the following areas:

1. A brief analysis of the firm’s sustainability strategy to identify areas of best practice focusing on its supply chain management [400 words] 20 marks

2. A critical discussion of the main issues impacting the firm’s supply chain that you would advise the firm to address [800 words] 40 marks

3. A proposal including a set of recommendations for the firm to address the issues identified, including an evidence-informed implementation strategy [800 words] 40 marks

Total:-100 Marks

Question 1 [20 marks]:

  • Choose one of the four provided Manager scenarios. Selecting a firm outside of these four will result in a score of zero.
  • If you encounter any difficulties locating or accessing the Manager interview recordings on Moodle, promptly inform your Module Leader or Tutors.
  • Select a Manager’s scenario considering possible relevant experiences you may have from this sector, your interest in working within the firm’s sector in the future, or because you can find ample publicly available information about its supply chain and sustainability strategy to enhance the information provided in the interview and support your analysis.
  • You do not need to provide a generic overview of your chosen firm or explain why you chose this firm; instead, focus directly on its sustainability strategy.
This question should be answered within 400 words with a 10% +/- allowance. The question is awarded 20 marks and covers Learning Outcome 2.

Question 2 [40 marks]:

  • Ensure that the issues you discuss align with those raised during the Manager interview.
  • To facilitate a thorough analysis of the identified issues, consider limiting them to a maximum of three. This approach allows for more in-depth exploration.
  • You can conduct additional research to uncover further details from the firm’s website and relevant publications.
  • Please note that direct contact with the company for additional information is not permitted unless you have obtained ethical approval via the University’s ethics system. For this assessment, you are not required to collect primary data. Instead, base your analysis on the interview and any other publicly available materials.
  • Should you lack sufficient data for your analysis, consider choosing an alternative Manager scenario from the provided four scenarios.
This question should be answered within 800 words with a 10% +/- allowance. The question is awarded 40 marks and covers Learning Outcome 4.

Question 3 [40 marks]:

  • Ensure that each recommendation directly targets a previously identified issue. Also, make sure that your recommendation(s) are clear, well-detailed, justified, and feasible within this context.
  • Briefly explain the necessary actions the firm must take to implement these recommendations, highlighting any potential obstacles.
  • To facilitate a thorough analysis of those points, consider limiting the recommendations to a maximum of three (at least one recommendation for each issue identified). This approach allows for more in-depth exploration.

This question should be answered within 800 words with a 10% +/- allowance. The question is awarded 40 marks and covers Learning Outcome 5.

Presentation/References

  • Organise your report, use headings, sections and page numbers, and provide relevant evidence to support your findings.
  • Ensure that your report includes a list of references at the end. All in-text citations and references should follow the University’s referencing guidelines.
  • To cite the interviewee, use this referencing style: O’Brien, J. (2025, May 10). Building Towards a Net Zero Future: Insights from Company X Construction Supply Chain". [University of Warwick].

Further Guidance:

  • There is no need to include an introduction and a conclusion section. Address directly the three questions.
  • Your report may include a table of contents, a list of figures, a list of tables, etc. These elements won’t be counted toward the word limit.
  • You can include any supplemental information, e.g. some background information about the selected company, diagrams and charts, in the Appendices at the end of your report.
  • Avoid lengthy Appendices, as markers may not read them thoroughly, or they may not read them at all if they are too long. Only include very important information that may enhance the reader’s understanding without disrupting the main text.
  • Please be aware that the answers included in the Appendices will not be awarded any marks.
