SST201 GROUP-BASED ASSIGNMENT

This assignment is worth 16% of the final mark for SST201 Sustainable Society Through Innovative Technology.  The cut-off date for this assignment is 05 October 2025 (Sunday), 23 55 hours (mark deduction will start at 12 noon on 06 October 2025).

This GBA covers materials studied from Study Units 1-3. You should review the materials in your study units and recommended resources before beginning the assignment. In addition, you will find it necessary to perform additional research in order to provide better answers to the questions.

TEAM FORMATION

1. Form a team of FOUR (4) to FIVE (5) people (strictly from the same T-group) and select a team leader. The responsibility of the team leader is to upload the report on behalf of the team. The team leader should also ensure that the entire GBA be put together neatly as a report, with proper pagination, margination, headings and sections.

2. Please  be  in  touch  with  your  group  members  by  18  Aug.  Let  your  lecturer  know  of member(s) who are not responding. If your lecturer does not hear from you by 18 Aug, your group will be confirmed, and you have to complete the entire GBA, even if you end up being the only active member.

3. If you do not respond to your group by 18 Aug, you may be re-assigned to other groups. Again, take note that the entire GBA has to be completed even if you end up being the only active member in the re-assigned group. So the idea is: get in touch with your team mates early!

4. As this is a GBA, all team members will be awarded the same grade. Thus, this would require  you  to  cooperate  with  one  another  closely  and  to  manage  your  own  team members’ input. Exchange contact numbers with one another, and decide on your roles and contributions. Stick to your agreed deadlines. Some students have found it useful to work on their GBA via Google Docs as they can see what the other team members are doing, and to track one another’s work.

5. If you intend to withdraw from the course and therefore not take part in the GBA, please inform your team members early. Do not put them in a position where they have to scramble at the last minute to take over your portion of work. 

6. You are strongly advised to set an internal deadline for your GBA group to compile your works. You could set this internal deadline at one week before the GBA submission. Your  submissions  to  the  group  should  be  in  almost  completed  form  by  the  internal deadline. Within this one week, your team is to put the GBA together (e.g. look and feel of the report, cover page, spellcheck, grammar check, correct labels, etc.) and to patch up any  major  lapses  (due  to  oversight,  non-submissions  from  team  members,  etc.).  The group  can  choose  to  exclude  members  who  cannot  submit  their  works  by  the internal deadline. So the idea is: do your allocated work on time and submit it, or you may be out of the GBA group.

SUBMISSION OF REPORT

1. There are two sections to this GBA. The first section is the submission of three ONE (1) page reports (OPR), and the second section requires you to write a TWO (2) pages report. A cover page as well as references and citations is required.

2. At the end of your report (Section A and B),  clearly list the work done by your team members.  The  table  below  is  an  example  for  you.  You  should  amend  the  ‘Members’ column according to the work allocated amongst yourselves.

3. Include following  particulars on the  cover  page  (template available on  Canvas  under Modules tab):
(a) Course Code & Name 
(b) Group No 
(c) Name and SUSS PI No for each member
(d) Submission Date

4. Compose your GBA using MS Word, and save either as .doc or .docx (preferred). Name your  document  file  strictly  in  this  format  – CourseCode_GBA01_FullName_GroupNo.     Use     underscore,     no     spacing. For example, SST201_GBA01_TanMeiMei_Group01 (omit D/O, S/O).

5. Report submitted via email will NOT be marked. Re-submission is NOT allowed after the cut-off date (including grace period).

SECTION A (60 marks)

In your team, craft THREE one-page reports (OPR), one on each of the following topics:  1. In  this  OPR,  briefly  explain  the  effect  of  air  pollution,  challenges,  and  potential solutions to address these challenges and create a more sustainable future for all. Use relevant examples to substantiate your claims.

2. The global solar market reached new heights with about 600 GW in 2024, with Asia-Pacific providing 70% of new capacity.

In this OPR, briefly discuss the technology behind solar power, and examine the steps to overcome the challenges of producing solar energy.

3. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the updated (2024) version of the Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance on health and environment.

In  this  OPR,  explain  the  proposed  interventions  for  reducing  disease  from environmental risks and saving millions of lives worldwide.

Specifications

The specifications of your OPRs are:

• A4 size one page report.
• Give your OPR a title.
• Minimal design restrictions, but minimal font is Times New Roman size 11 as the words appear in the report. • Expected content – Introduction, Evidence, Discussion, References.
• Expected media - Words, Charts, Tables, Pictures, Diagrams etc.
• The OPR cannot be a single page in image format. All texts, except for those in Charts, Tables, Pictures, Diagrams, etc., must be editable. This is to ensure that the contents can be scanned by Turnitin. • Expected design – Informative and appealing.
• If you include tables or diagrams, make sure they are (a) readable, (b) relevant to your report, and (c) cited in your OPR.

Important

Note that all portions of the OPRs must be able to be read by Turn-It-In. Whichever portions that cannot be read by Turn-It-In will not be marked. So, for example, if you have submitted the entire OPR2 in image format, which Turn-It-In cannot read, your OPR2 will score 0 marks.

You are permitted to cite from Wikipedia only ONCE for each OPR. Every additional citation from Wikipedia will carry a penalty mark. The list of references is to be placed immediately after each respective OPR. There is no need to cite your study guides or lecture notes.

This is a one-page report and not a mind map. Submission of a mind map will be scored 0 marks.

Each OPR is worth 20 marks. You will be graded on breadth, depth and presentation of your ideas. Marks will also be awarded for quality and quantity of your references.

Cautionary note:

A one-page report may appear to be very easy to do, but it is not. It is not simply copying from your lecture notes. Rather, you have to distil the information from a variety of sources (e.g. lecture notes, reliable internet sources, journals, textbooks, etc.) and present it in a form that is easily read and digested by others. Your report should present core information, raise compelling points and offer reasonable, plausible recommendations. To achieve such a report, your research work must begin early. Start reading on your  assigned topic early, jot down notes, and interconnect your information to form  a coherent report. In short, it will take effort to score well in the one-page report – but it is entirely possible.

SECTION B (40 marks)

Write a report that offers qualitative and quantitative insights into smart city trends, challenges, and opportunities, including fresh data on regional variations, the digital divide, skills gaps, and much more. Your report should evaluate the impact of smart city technologies and strategies on sustainability, resilience, equity, social inclusion, accessibility and quality of life. Use a real case to justify each of your points. Your claims must be substantiated with evidence and references.

As in Section A, you can use either Harvard or Numeric referencing, and you can cite from Wikipedia only ONCE. This report should NOT exceed two pages (excluding references) and must be written in at least font size 12 Times Roman. The list of respective references is to be placed immediately after this section. Be sure to cite your references within the report to make your report credible. There is no need to cite your study guides or lecture notes.
